I'd love more subi rumble though!

I don't remember what board they came from but I did find them when I was looking for stock header pictures.

Keeping the EA81 goodness or going the dizzy EJ'd route again?

Cheers

I don't know Bennie when I got this one it seemed the motor wasn't happy and I was worried that it had a blown head gasket.

Over the last couple of months I've started it at least once a week to stop the battery from dying.

It has a high idle on the auto choke so I've just been leaving it to run on that until it gets warm and I think it likes it.

I can't really see the spark plugs due to the power steering and aircon, but once I find them I'm going to change them out for a set of AC delco double platinums 41804.
That way I wont have to go near them for around 100000 kms at least.

This week I'm going to tackle the broken gearbox (I'm hoping I will be able to do it) in the driveway where it is sitting now.

:)

Gee I say some stupid things like...
This week I'm going to tackle the broken gearbox (I'm hoping I will be able to do it) in the driveway where it is sitting now.
Before I took the box I drained it to make sure it was stuffed. I let the oil go and got rather worried. Apart from the normal filings on the magnetic drain plug there were no tell tale bits nice clean gear oil????. Right near the end when the flow turns into a dribble, the dribble split into two and that's when I saw sitting on the drain hole...

crown gear or pinion gear? I guess that's why it was so noisy

I then went ahead and ... well I got the box out

old box in the back replacement on the ground :)

I did notice a new clutch cable, clutch kit, thrust bearing and even the throw out arm looks new.

Now that it is 33 degrees I've stopped for the day.

Tomorrow I will try to get the replacement in

So what is that in the pic that came out last - a gear tooth or part of a bearing cage? I can't really tell.

What nasty stuff was the box doing in this condition?

Good work on the DIY driveway gearbox drop! You should organise a Subaru convention at yours, many hands make light work (well, the ones that actually get their hands dirty, but good company is always appreciated!).

It is either the crown or pinion gear.

The car was like that when I bought it.

Bennie get some glasses :)

I is wondering how it would have run if you filled up with oil and took it for a test drive now you have one piece of stuff out of the way of the gears. We'll never know now :(

Top marks on removing the gearbox with engine in place. Were you directly underneath, taking the weight of the lump, and is this how it goes back in? Or do you have some WA drop/lift secret tool ? I would still remove engine to get at gearbox

I don't need to know if that bit was missing from either the crown wheel or the pinion shaft then the box is toast.

If you look at the second picture in the post you will see the secret magical device I used to get the box out. As well I just pushed it out from the engine bay and let it hit the ground. the old box is going to the tip. So I wasn't too worried about how it came out, as long as I wasn't under it when it did come out. :)

Getting it back in will be more of a challenge, as I don't have a balance plate to put on the jack (secret magical device) I will say the day Bennies box went back in up in Perth it did give me a few ideas on how to get the box in.

The video below is the noise the box was making when being driven. Ignore the wires hanging out of the dash I must put a stereo in yet.

Everything bar the inner CV's is back in, I'm currently running in rear wheel drive. That will change tomorrow morning when I have finished inspecting and re-installing the Front CV shafts.

For the record I started at 9am and finished at 11:55 am, I'm hoping I don't have to do that again in a hurry.

Glasses? Something in the pic for reference of size would be better :p

Or you can sponsor me for a phone with a larger screen :p

On the subject of how the box would go with that missing tooth, it could tick with each revolution and would most likely end up dying with some horrible and loud noises... Worst case it could lock the front end or put the car into a spin as the front diff could allow one wheel to spin forwards and the other to turn backwards, or at least rotate at a slower speed than the other wheel inducing the spin...

Fair effort on those times there mate!
