Subemarine back with a vengeance

Post by GOD » Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:20 am

Long time readers may recall this little episode from the middle of last year. Since then she's had lots of problems, lots of work - including two engines - and is now finally starting to come good again, so I thought it's time for a "my car" thread.

Some history:

It's a povo pack 1993 L Series that began its career with the Tassie Hydroelectric Authority, before being bought by a family who drove it here, half killed it, parked it for a while then sold it to me.

I first swapped out the carbied poo motor for an EJ18, which had been in gx_rex's Impreza. That's the engine that drowned, so it's block now serves as a paperweight but its heads should soon power a certain Brumby around here. In went an EJ22, running unhappily on the EJ18 electronics and ancillaries. That motor turned out to be quite unhealthy, so I got another EJ22, which had powered Subafury's wagon and I think Matatak's MY before that, had the heads reconditioned, and dropped that in.

Along the way it's also gained HD springs, ex-Wanky Wagon 14s and big tyres then little tyres, seats from one of Andrew's parts Libs, power steering and some panels from an L that I wrecked, roobar from another wreck, a modified two-row copper MY radiator, a custom rear bar and various other little toys. Latest mods are a 2.5" exhaust and a snorkel, which still needs a few tweaks.

Still on the to-do list are getting the EJ22 electronics in so she'll run properly (underway), some mods to the fuel system to stop surging and cavitation, then maybe a stereo (I've never had one in it) and air con.

When I got it:

Nice ride, I think bumpers and tire carriers really add to the apperance of the wagons, will need to do my white 90 up after the ej and lift. Whats "povo pack" ?

Whats "povo pack" ?
it's Australian slang for the base model no aircon, stereo, electric windows etc

IMHO less to go wrong with the car

especially if you like driving it into big puddles :)

Yep, povo pack = poverty pack = base model. And it does have its advantages.

Tried Beela Rd, but it was blocked off after a few km, and most of the side tracks had lots of no entry signs, so I turned back and had a bit of a play in the pine plantation before heading to Wellington Dam. That photo is by the Collie River, off Lennard Rd.

haha, yeah the snorkel is currently a bit big. I'm planning to cut it down and put a head on it at about roof height.
