22-BSB, The Prequel
This Thread Is to show off All the Things I did to my ute BEFORE its current rebuild on the rottisserie, Which can be seen HERE>>>showthread.php?t=16073
I was going to build a Brumby for Rally, after having my L Touring wagon and seeing how good it was on the dirt. the plan was EJ engine, 4WD5speed, LSD ,Rollcage, Targa roof, WRBlue paint ect. while saving up the money and knowhow to get it done, Im on Ebay One day, I found this>
Roll cage, Cams Log book, EJ22, Auto, LSD, Liftkit, Custom Suspension, Sunroof. $3400.
Gee, I thought, That's convenient! I could save some time and money here, buying one already done, just get in and Race. (or so I thought) Seeing as an EJ engine or front cut goes for about 2k and a brumby is about 2k and its got the cage and cams rego done, Its a Bargain!! (or so I thought) So I started asking questions, and spoke to the guy on the phone a fair bit, and decided Yes!! Ill Take It!! (sight unseen) In the meantime I was doing my first 'mod' a custom dash>
I Got it put on a truck and dropped off infront of my house. Well, That was probably the most Dissapointing day of my life. When I came home from work, Sooo exited to get my new car, (that I''ld spent ALL my money on, and told everyone about) And I take one look at it, my heart sinks.
Its all covered in white powdery stuff, not shiny like in the photos, theres only one seat, Bullbars half hanging off, the sunroofs ducttaped up, theres wires and hoses all through the cabin. holes in the floors and tray and rearwall.
So I get in, and start to roll it down into my yard and I discover it doesnt turn very well, and full lock is a gentle meander to the right. \And when I go to stop before I hit something, like the house, I quickly learn it has No Brakes either!! I reef the handbrake on hard as it goes, and hang on for dear life, picking up speed instead of slowing down, Listening to the Orchestra of Banging and clanging and thumping and clunkings and grinding noises until it rolls to a stop halfway down my backyard. That was one frightening First Drive!!
First things first, a wash is in order.
So after getting to know the curves of my new rig, I wanna hear the engine!! I was told it doesnt have a fuelpump and would need a EFI one, but i had a look under and it had Two fuel pumps!! stock cube one and a Bosch 'VL' type. Mustnt work I thought so I took it out, and tested it and it pumped hard. You Beauty!! hooked it up, put some fuel in the tank, connected the Jumper leads to the engine and jumped in the seat. I put the key in, Turned it, and It started winding over, and over and over.... and over.
I couldnt hear the fuelpump, so hardwired it with new wires, then tried again. this time the fuel pump was going, but it didnt so much as putt once. I stayed there all afternoon, dicking with the fuel pump, sparkplugs and leads, fuses, everything I could think of, but it just would'nt go, and had a Horrid smell about it, Like Really Stale piss. It was dark now, so I risked life and limb again, rolled it into my new 'shed' and went to bed, not the happiest chappy.
TBC...........

So I mucked around for little while, envisioning how things were ment to be, i cleaned up and painted the tray, to stop any rust, cleaned and painted the bullbar, threw my WRX seats in, did the dash up a bit...
but i still hadnt heard it run...
So, without much idea of what i was doing, but a ute-full of enthusiasm, i attacked the wiring....

After about 3 weeks of every after work hour, to midnight sometimes, and nightmares of pits of snakes, I emerged, mightily proud of myself, with this...
(note: at this stage im yet to cut 8feet from the main loom, which is why it isnt wrapped)
and this is after removing said 8feet, but unwrapped and still with a few stragglers.
Looking much better...

thats alll normally rally car stuff.
V8 supercars are painted with permament markers.
we saw formula one teams take a grinder to the block of lead.
pipes in the cabin is normal, same a under the bonnet, i know of two really good examples and they arent driven much.
still looks good and i really like the idea of a rally brumby, just need to find a class

I also removed the fuel tank, steam cleaned it out for a few hours, painted it, and where it hangs, and cleaned all the lines, got a final filter, And mounted the pump...
So, after meticulously re-doing the loom, and spending days wrapping the wole thing in spiral wrap, i went ahead and plugged it all in. it was at about this time that i pondered whether i should have maybe tested it worked before wrapping it all...
So I nervously inserted the key, turned it all the way around, and almost straight away, "VRROOOM, BRAUP BRUP BRUP!!!!" ( i didnt have an exhaust hooked up either, so yeah, t'was slightly loud)
But its alive!!
"VROOM, VROOOOOOOOM" it's about now i notice this unusual orange glow from through where the floor is 'suposed' to be, so i switch it off, and get out to look, when i discover my medium intesity engine fire starting around the exhaust ports...
So i smash it out with the extiguisher from my rally datto, (which was close luckily) and prevented all my hard work from going up in flames. it was about this point i decided to run atleast something of an exhaust. This is probly the only time having rusty floors is in anyway, whatsoever, a 'good' thing
But it RUNS!!!
I was stoked!

In between doing the 'hard' 'boring' and 'important' stuff, i like to do some small things to customise my ute, and keep me interested and focused to the project.
'Billet' polished Stainless rear vision mirror
matching Polished stainless switch panel
Touring wagon map lights
I also re-made my already 'custom dash'...
