The Beast

Post by electricbluejase » Sat Jul 24, 2010 3:12 pm

Hi, new here and just bought a cheap car/project for $600.

Found out that the 1.8 carby in her though is pretty much on it's last legs. which sucks a bit, but oh well.
- plan on replacing the engine shortly.

Also the windscreen needs replacing, so tracking one down for her at this stage as well.

I have the pictures on my facebook here -> http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id= ... =632152202 <-

Image

The body looks in pretty good shape apart from one bit of rust of the drivers side door and 2 small dents on the body.

The inside is in pretty good order and is clean, all the doors work. all the lights work, tyres got tread, hoping things will be better once i replace the motor in her. so yeah. here is my beast, yet to be named.

let me know what you think of her.

nice buy. havnt seen a dual batt setup like that in one of these cars. good stuff.

i was reading a few of the comments on the pic of the auto on ur facebook, trying to figure out if its 4wd or awd. these cars are front wheel drive and when the 4wd button selected it is 4wd. not awd as it doesnt have a centre differential. so dont go driving on sealed roads in 4wd else you will stuff ur box.
pretty sure the auto boxes are single range. manual boxes are dual range. no hubs to lock in or anything.

have fun
cheers

It has great potential. Got any more pics of that spare wheel carrier on the back?

And on that AWD/4WD business, the distinction is only marketing wank. If a vehicle has four wheels and all are driven, AWD = 4WD. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Yeah, I like her. I mean she brakes, turns and all that fine. I know i'm in for spending at the very least another $500 before she is all up and running, but i think it will be worth it.

Cheers Hylton, and I don't drink Emu Export though, I got a bottle of slate whiskey on hand at this stage, or I drink Cold filtered or alot of other ones, but definately not Emus or VBs

Yeah, the dual batt setup looks pretty cool, however i think one of the batteries maybe not too good, it has one of those 'self-test' things, where if its black or white? it needs replacing and it's already at that color. but yeah.

Yeah, i used the switch to see what it would do on the front grass/sand area, so i hope that won't stuff her up much. the gearbox might need replacing (although i hope not) as when accelerating it gets stuck in 2nd (i think), especially when cold. although having the trans. fluid overfilled from the prev. owner doesn't help too much. nietherless, will replace her down the track when i upgrade the engine, but for now just going to get a good going 1.8 carb, back in her hopefully for only a few hundred and drive that for a year or 2 (is the plan) but yeah.

cheers.

With the knocking i have in the engine, and i have already drove and checked it with Guyth, it's definately fooked.

Yeah i want to see if i could setup some kind of outlet in the boot for fridge or something on long trips.

Plans, well at this stage...
1) replace engine and 2) replace windscreen, so i can drive her around, try to avoid 3) replace gearbox at this stage.. but who knows. and well i'm not sure on what kind of things i want to do with her at this stage. but knowing me i'll try and put cruise control into her :D

any-way, cheers.

Yeah it does have great potential, especially with the body having hardly any rust. my last car was a Ford XF and well put it this way, the rust had won...

I can get you another pic if you want?

I have this one, and yes, i spray painted the tow bar black but it looks so much better as a very quick mod/fix :p

Oh yeah well that's fair enough about the AWD/FWD, it doesn't bother me but i do plan on taking her off road in the coming years, when she is ready for it though.

cheers.

Here is an update on how the beast (yet to be named) is going.

Things that the beast requires to be up and running.
1) Windscreen Replacement
2) Engine Replacement

Gearbox (Maybe)- Now there is a possibility that i might have to replace the gearbox as well, when driving along (even though the engine is so dodgy...) It gets stuck in second->third (auto) but well mostly happens when its cold though. what could this be?

Windscreen- I am currently trying to track down a second hand windscreen replacement, found a place that does it for $200 but they won't return my calls, so I am still on the hunt...

Engine- after a replacement 1.8 Carby engine for the beast, yes i want to do a EJ conversion down the track, can i afford it all at once at the moment, nope, i just want my beast back on the roads as soon as possible.

Stereo- I have an kenwood deck in there at the moment, which seems to do the trick with AUX, although want to upgrade to something with USB down the track, this will do for now.

Speakers- I have put 1 sony xplod into the left door (replaced the dead speaker in there) seemed to fit alright for some temp. sound. although it's only got 1 screw in at this stage, took off the cover that it came with, it's the only speaker i had on hand and i wanted at least something, but will need to replace the front speakers, and there is no speakers in the boot, already checked, but want to put probly some 6x9s into there. maybe...

That's all i can think of at this stage.

After much deciding, thinking and looking at my options.

Now... to source an new heart for her.
