Well technically it's a 1993 brumby, at least that's what the vicroads rego says! But the build date is 12/92, so that explains it.

Bought this brumby last year for 3600, with only 162,000k's on the ODO!
It was a little rough and came without a RWC, it cost me around 400 to get it RWC which was pretty good (I thought).

The first thing I bought for it was a tonneau cover, next came a fire extinguisher which is mounted in between the front seats. Since I bought the car I've had to replace the exhaust (350) because the old one was shagged.

The next thing I bought was some peugot wheels (5) and some good quality road tyres. Recently I switched to all terrain/mud tyres

I've being reading all the threads on here about diff locks/gear boxes/lift kits and other crazy mods, and getting ideas all the time... Can't help myself when it comes to modifying cars, and the challenge of creating a competitive offroad brumby is too much to resist!

However, I'm the first to admit I would also love a cruiser!

To keep it simply heres a simple current mod list:

-maxxis offroad tyres
-peugot wheels 14" and new lock nuts to suit
-jack mount removal in engine bay
-fire extinguisher mounted in cabin
-chainsaw/gear box mounted in tray
-herculiner'd rear tray
-new tonneau cover
-cd player
-UHF
-roof racks

Parts waiting to go in:

-Crossbred 2" lift kit
-Lifted suspension front/rear
-ARB compressor
-subaru outback 2002 donor car driveline (ej25/manual d/r)
-safari snorkel from early hilux
-different front guards that will be chopped up
-flares

Planned in future:

-air lockers
-front winch
-15" wheels/tyres

Let us know how you go with the engineer. A two inch kit shouldn't be an issue, nor should the EJ25, brakes could be and the oversized tyres will more than likely be an issue - that's basically what I got from a couple of engineers in melbourne that I spoke to a few years back... I'm hoping to save some money and get that approval - one day

Good luck on the search for the auto locker for the R160 rear diff! Rarer than Hen's Teeth AND rocking horse poo, and if you do find one, expect to pay more than an arm and a leg!

I literally emailed 3/4 of the engineers on the VASS list within 1 our of melbourne, only 1 said they could help me. I get the feeling it's not worth there precious time for such a small job and individual, little do they know that this isn't the only car I have engineering plans for, whoever helps me will be getting a lot more work over the next 5+ years!

I'm not expecting trouble with the lift, I am going to receive advice on the maximum lift possible. Would love to get in contact with steve at rising sun and see what he has available also. The engine should be ok also. Expect to pay 1500-3000 in approvals though.

Thought I'd put that in my signature (r160 locker wanted), I once spent 2 years tracking down a USDM part for my other car, so I wont give up haha!

Nice work! I've got an EJ22, 3 inch lift and 27 inch tyres on the L series that I'd like to get past. I was thinking it'd be more near the $5g mark...

Let us know how you go anyway, I'd be keen to know that it can be done - he might be getting some more business if it all goes well

Picked up an xt turbo awd 89 model subaru vortex with front/rear diff lockers!
For parts, using the rear disc for brumby and havent decided on much else yet.
running, bit rough. body average with a fair amount of rust going to part it out in the near future.
would love to also use the gearbox, but mod it as a dual range and somehow incorportate the ability to have front/rear diff locks by installing the centre viscous lsd that the vortex has. much research to be done.

Good score there mate! The only thing wrong is that they don't have front and rear diff lockers - what you're talking about is the centre diff lock. The gearbox is AWD with an open centre diff, when you want some crazy performance onroad or you're headed 4wd'n you lock the centre diff, it gives the same offroad performance as a Part Time 4wd subaru gearbox but gives you the added advantage of AWD on road, which can make a huge difference if you're going to upgrade the engine to something with a larger power output.

Also it'll be an XT4 - if it is an XT6 it will be a non turbo flat 6 cylinder, basically an EA82 with two extra cylinders! Check out the exhaust ports, I'm pretty sure there will be two per head to three cylinders

Either way it is still a good score! The rear discs will be a very good brake upgrade, the gearbox with some work (for dual range as I'm sure it will be a single range box) will go awesome and you *might* have a clutch pack LSD in the rear end, also worth some coin. Don't go breaking things either, there are some members on here that might need interior parts etc if you're going to part it out Is this the one from ebay a few weeks back?

it is the ebay one yep.

its definetely an xt4, your right, and i understand the diff setup now (got a bit excited before haha).

got most of the gear for the rear disc conversion off, had to spray the hub nut with inox and let it soak, is not coming off even with a 50cm shifter and breaker bar!!

the rear diff is a 3.7 (has a sticker), with some other numbers. can you figure out if its LSD from the part number?

Yeah sounds right to me too. The other way to check it is to jack up the left and right rear wheels, spin one wheel and if the other spins in the same direction it's an LSD, if the other wheel spins opposite it's an open diff.

yeah that was the first thing I did. span opposite ways though, ah well. is it always an accurate way to test if its LSD though? (for some reason I thought it may not work if its on the way out, i.e very worn).

my DIY housemate wants me to get the motor tested and put it in the brumby if its ok, i'd still prefer an ej25, though we could get this in much quicker.

If you were to put the EA82 - turbo or not - into a brumby you have to widen the chassis rail, people usually cut out the required section plus some then weld in a plate to make it look all neat. Same has to be done for the DOHC EJ's.

Wiring would be the nightmare here IMO. It would take some time to cut it down properly if it's you're first loom cut down.

But it'd still go well if the engine's holding up well!

If you keep at standard suspension height EA82 will fit with about 4 ~ 5 mm clearance each side. LIFT it and you likely to have chassis rail clearance issues with EA82. Just increase the width of the engine mount stud slots by about 5mm outwards each side and EA82 should slot right in. Mount the washer bottle further back on the inner guard to clear the dizzy of the EA82

This is looking like its gonna by a nice little project. Definitely get a Ej25, I'm so happy with mine. That AWD box is also gonna make a world of difference compared to the front 2wd boxes and is gonna be a bit easier to fit in the brumby:) Also if that xt has a blue interior and is reasonable, well dibs on most of it. Sorry Jonno, I wasn't aware of this! I thought you needed to mod the rails without question for those engines. I hope you've got some good engine mounts!

hey guys,
what type of roof rack do you recommend for a brumby?

i've found two brands: thule and whispbar that have an option for the brumby.

rhino replied to my email saying they dont have the car details on file but they have these sizes:

1250mm
1375mm
1500mm
1650mm

giving the diff breather idea a shot, but after getting under the car i cant see the rear diff breather at all, after clearing all the crap away i still cant see it. o i have to remove the diff from the car to do this?
