is the dash light coming on with the engine not running? If it isnt make sure its not a blown light.

Not sure how the EJ system works but with old school alternator setups, the alternator has an excite coil which energizes. That coil allows the alternator to start charging. After it starts charging it self excites, so the startup excite coil is no longer needed. If that excite coil isnt coming on when you first start the car, or the voltage its getting supplied is getting pulled low by high current, the alternator wont start charging.

Possibly now with modern cars the alternator excite is driven by the ECU. So without looking at schematics its hard to guess. Double check the brushes first :D.

Regards

Doug
There is a light which is coming on upon start up but flickers on and off, looks like the hazard light symbol if that's any clue?

After owning Maple for almost a week she's surprised me good and bad.

Second time in 2 days she hasn't been able to hold charge in the battery even with a new one in it, alot of clicking coming from the fuse box even when the key is turned to ACC ON.

Can't sleep knowing she is in the drive-way dying D=

Hopefully today or tomorrow can check the charge from the alt or what ever is sucking power while the key is off :3
RSR 555 wrote:2 things come to mind when I read this. First one is aftermarket immobilizers.. these things are known for their ability to suck the life ot of any good battery. The second thing I'd check, is the alternator is not getting a feed back. Usually a good auto sparkie can check this for you and fit a diode inline if required.
She's got a hell of a imob-flash that's for sure, but that shouldn't be it.

When an Auto-sparky looks under that hood he's going to shake a head. Both from me, and the bloke who put the guts of it all in. :-|

I'd be keen to know what it was, when you find out. The re-conned-starter went in not long ago.

Hope this message finds you with a healthy Maple!

Edit: New posts have been made since I typed all that, good work on tracking down the Alternator, that's a new one!

Alright, so I got elbow deep into yesterday, checked all the connections, re wired some tested the charging system and in the end, alternator had poo'd itself.

Quick trip down to the wreckers, quick spray of contact cleaner and she's running as smooth as butter :)

Was also a radiator out job which let me learn some more things about how maple works.

=D

Keen as a bean! Sounds like it was an easy fix though. I'm relieved.

Too true there Bennie.. I guess they gave him the off road bug. Very hard to convince others the fun you can have in the Subie as apposed to the larger (not so fun) 4WDs.

Shame to see Maple on the market again but all the best with the sale
