Stretch's Brumby.

Hi I'm Stretch and this is my 85 brumby.
It was fairly tidy when u bought it, just needed a really good wash. [ATTACH]3933[/ATTACH]
In the few months I've owned it I added a sun visor and uhf roof mount antenna. ( due to it already having a hole in the roof)

I made a custom fascia for a head unit and amped some 6 inch speakers behind the seats.

And the latest was a bullbar i picked up a few weeks back. Just need to sort out some mounts so i can fit my driving lights again.

Other than that it's just had a service, new plugs, leads and coil and I have a carby kit for it that might help it's cold starts.

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated as it's my first subi... Cheers, Jason.

looks like a nice tidy ute!
i really like the stereo fascia you made looks very tidy and 'original'
my tip would be regular oil changes, do the gearbox and rear diff oil as usually these are forgotten, and also to keep it away from salt water and keep things out of the tub that hold moisture to prevent cancer.

Cool looking ute, I have a soft spot for the beige ones. That is the neatest job of making a stereo fascia I think I've seen.

Yeah I was extremely happy with the stereo. Normally I wont mess with the stock look, but AM radio was killing me.

Is it normal for the brumby to have a nose down stance or are my front springs shagged?

Mine is nose-down too.

Maybe they're both shagged? :p

You could wind out the adjustable rear suspension to level it out more? I have mine slightly wound up as I usually have something heavy in the back. :)

I've never looked at the rear shocks close enough to see if they adjust. It did my head in when I realised they dont use springs!

Underneath the car in the center (near the rear diff) you'll see a flat - 'saddle' shaped plate connected to all of that. It will have a large (19mm?) Bolt sticking out of it. If you wind it in, the back lifts, if you wind it out, the back drops. It's likely to be fairly stiff so it's best of you Jack up your rear end first. :)

What's normal? They could be shagged but my guess would be the rear suspension is wound up and the front isn't. You can wind up both front and rear on these models. Up for 4WDing and down for everyday driving to work. Most people just leave them wound up but this does put more stress on the CV Joints.

It doesnt show in my pics but there is a considerable difference from front to back, it doesnt look 'normal' more like an old school muscle car (with out muscle). I'd say the old owner wound up the back as it sounds like the easier end to do.

What you mean "without the muscle" ?? it's just oozing muscles.. or is that just the driver after driving it because they didn't have power steering :rolleyes:

Most owners wind up the back when they carry loads in the back most of the time and like you say, it's easier to do. If you wind either end up or down, try and use some good quality lubricating, I use Fluid Film as stays on there longer than things like WD40/CRC.

Haha 'strong arm steering'. Not so much when the ute weighs less than a shopping trolley. Might even smear some marine grease on the bolt and joints and work it in.

Ordered some gear stick bushes from Frog today, who would have thought he works with my sisters partner, small world.

well, for starters, slip under the bum and measure the gap between the tip of the bump stop to body. Factory is 20mm

I had a quick look under there today and it would be lucky to have 20mm clearance. If anything im thinking the front may have sagged a little. The hand book says the front has less clearance than the back.

Hey Stretch the other thing to check on the gear shifter is the selector piece on the box itself. From factory they have just a roll pin to hold it and after time, they become flogged out and make the gear shifter feel very sloppy.

I like to cut along the side of it and then put a high tensile bolt and not in were the roll pin goes, then do up as tight as possible.

Yeah i read that mod the other day. Thought i better order the bushes before i pulled it apart. Ive got plenty of nuts and bolts around the workshop, but i might measure what i need and grab a decent bolt with a nylock.

I forgot to mention that I also clean the gearbox shaft and selector, then put some 2 part epoxy on the selector before putting it back together, this just helps keep any oil out.
