Just got my 1989 Subaru Brumby on the road after weeks of work with my brother - T.Farm.Brumby - to get it up to scratch for the RWC.
The thread started by him is here:
showthread.php?t=24627
She's looking good now, got the plates on it and have taken it for a good burn - runs like a dream. Everything I am planning to do on it I will post in this thread.
I'm hoping to:
- Put the newly painted bullbar back on (and attach the aerials and spotties)
- Lift kit (if anyone has one for sale or knows someone please let me know)
- Bigger tyres, probably 14'' rims as well
- Replace the chrome flashing on the tailgate
More updates to come plus pictures.
Cheers
Frances

Hi and Welcome Frances
I bet you'll have some great fun in the little brumby. As for the bits you want to do to it..
1. Pics are a must once the front bar is on and kitted up
2. Make a lift kit yourself, if not keep an eye out in the 'For Sale' section or give me a shout once you're ready and I'll see if I have some blocks for you.
3. 14" rims are well worth the extra height. I'd keep an eye on the thread about the scorpion based rims that Phil is looking to make up, as these will have the correct offset for the MY Series.
4. Have you got the old tailgate strip? as they are like hens teeth to find and probably easier to repair your old one.
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the welcome guys
Paul - thanks for the info, I will keep my eye out for sure. Also, it did come with the tailgate flashing but I just need to find some clips to attach it - which are apparently difficult to find? I haven't even thought about making my own lift kit... is it difficult/time-consuming?
Cheers!

Time consuming = Yes
Do you or Tom know your way around a welder? or someone else in the fam?
The most difficult parts are the tops of the shockes and the steering knuckle but there is plenty of info on here and also lots of people willing to help you out if needed.

I can use a welder but I'm not exactly proficient haha, the old man isn't bad. We only have an old stick welder though, would we get away with that or will it be too much of a pain without a MIG? Suppose it depends on what we use too?
Can make up two so I have one in my brumby too
Ps, I was chuffed when we found the chrome flashing, it's pretty straight too

Yeah but just use good quality rods and clean steel and you should be fine.T.Farm.Brumby wrote:I can use a welder but I'm not exactly proficient haha, the old man isn't bad. Got an update on the Brumby...
The brother (T.Farm.Brumby) just put my new alternator in after some unwanted issues arose. I'm just wearing her in and coming across a few little issues as I go, so far nothing too drastic. Considering she sat in a shed for 3 years without running I'm pretty happy with her performance.
I'm hoping to put my white canopy back on, it matches the Sunny rims well.
Also planning on putting it in to get a new exhaust (2.25'') and a new cat as well. She already has quite a nice sound (dat boxer!) but the whole exhaust system is rusted out unfortunately and causing a few issues while driving
In the next few weeks I am going to paint the bull bar and windscreen wipers matt black (they've been painted previously but are all chipped now). Once that's done I can mount the aerial etc.
Will post some pics when I've started the upgrades!
Cheers

Pictures as promised...
The day I bought her...

...And after we fixed her up for the roadworthy

Engine bay with a brand spankin' Alternator

...Unfortunately the little beast has started surging. Not sure if it's carby related or a fuel issue. Mostly surges when driving uphill, then have to stop and turn the key off, wait a minute, then start her up again. At this stage I guess it will be trial and error with cleaning and replacing fuel filters and lines etc, and might need to get at the carby to give it a clean *cringe*. Any other ideas?
Cheers

MY Surging
The surging can often be due to a clogged fuel filter, not the one in the engine bay but the one under the tray which is often forgotten.
Gen 1 Legacy GT 3inch lift and 28's
If possible check the new filter & see if it clear or contaminated with sludge, have seen a number of times where sediment sits on the bottom when stationary, however under load, inclines etc it has been known to be sucked up & temporarily blocks the line until it gets a chance to settle again. Tricky little gremlins are everywhere
Awesome thanks guys, will endeavour to give these a go when I get a chance
...I also found out that she's not waterproof! Found out the hard way. Seems as though I have more rust than I thought - all throughout the windscreen region. Looks like I'll have some work to do there and then replace the windscreen (needs replacing anyway).
Cheers

UPDATE:
Looks like it might be an issue with the fuel pump after a mate had a look at it... waiting to see what condition it is in once he's finished tinkering with it. Hopefully that is all it is... it's looking promising.
Cheers for your help fellas

Rust around the window frame is pretty normal on this model, so best to get to it asap before it spreads too badly.
As for the fuel pump, have a look on fleabay for a new one if you find that it is the pump
