I bought it for $900 spent about $500 geting it roadworthy, I havent done much to it, Mainly just the stereo install which is about 60% finished.

The stereo is my old system which I havent used for about 6 years but it sounded good then and still should I hope.

Sony CD headunit
Coustic 4ch amp
Pioneer 4ch (got this for nothing 1channel is blown)
Pioneer 6x9's with compression horn tweeters
12" coustic sub
Sony 6" front splits
Kenwood Eq

I though the lack of cup holders was a problem that need rectifiying. I tried looking for pvc at bunnings but they didnt have any that were the right size. I went to the warehouse and found some plastic cups that fit stubbie holders nicely, So I taped these up (easyer and stronger than painting) and siliconed them in... Nice

Now for the sub, I wanted to still be able to fold the rear seats down for practicality, and to fit the mini bike, so I mounted it side on.


Side compartment cut out- this was to give a little more volume to the box.

Yeah It's taking way to long.

Best bit with the cup holders is they fit a can/stubbie with a stubbie holder on. Not sure how long they'll last though the plastic isnt the best, Ill keep an eye out for something better.


Just put some weight on it while the silicone was curing

i see u took the side compartments out to put the boxes in. exactly how my 6x9's are set up but i didnt make boxes i just cut a piece of wood the shape of the compartment and screwwed it down where the previous screws were. sounds great. looks like a alot of effort with those boxes. but nice job. love the cup holders. :D

The side compartment is gong to have the subwoofer, I think I got about 30litres to the box (ive writn the dimensions down somewhere) It isnt enought for my sub but ill use it anyway and pack it with wadding. The 6x9's are going in the tailgate, Ive also sprayed body deadner in the inside of the tailgate and front doors.

Actually got it off ebay from Warrnambool a few months ago, yeah the pipes nice, sounds good too but your pants get a bit fumey from it's position. It's actually the j model z50 which can actually be road registered, it has fold down handle bars, lights, horn and speedo but the indicators are missing.

yeh watch the back plastic though. the reason why i didnt put my 6x9s is because they create vibration and end up making it an ass of a job to fix when the plastic is broken

Ive already stuffed the plastic . It was already loose, and when I took it off I broke most of the plastic plugs and surrounds that hold it in, happens every time I get inside a door trim aswell lol.

Ive made a board for the speakers to go across the back and screw through the plastic into the metal, Ill see how it goes, hopefully it holds the plastic in well enough and doesnt vibrate too much.

you could also try replacing the back panel with a peice of mdf, and screwed the 6x9's into that. it will make it a lot stronger and wont vibrate as much.

would also look good if you trimmed it with vinyl or something.

you might run intio troubles with the tailgate struts supporting the extra weight, but theres people who come and regas them, and they can put in a little extra and change the valving to suit. cost me about 30 bucks a strut for mine

also for the rattles try putting a bit of foam behind the number plate, tape all the wires in the back up so they cant rattle against anything, and try wrapping tape and foam around the locking mechanism to stop that doing it too... also dot be scared to use lots of the sound deadening.


another thing.. have you thought about using fibreglass to build your box (probably too late now anyways) but theres a heap of useable space behind that trim on the side that you cant really get to any other way (unless youre a gun carpenter and can do some tricky angles) heres one i prepared earlier, you can still remove that box from the car, takes up about as much space as yours and completely replaces the trim panel on the side. BUT was an absolute pain in the bum to make

So it was you I stole the idea off for the side on sub, id seen a pic of yours on here a while ago.

Ive never fiberglassed before but with the time it took me to build the box, I probably could have learnt. The fibreglass looks much neater and would probably have more volume to it not to mention the weight saving.

Ive got some grey carpet and vinyl to cover things up with, I hope to have enough left over to make a luggage cover to go sideway across from the sub box to the rhs.

Thanks for the tailgate hints, If it does weight to much I'll do the elcheapo pvc tube idea I also saw on here. Trying to get this done on a little $$ as possible, dunno why just a goal Ive set for myself. I really should just get a new headunit with mp3 but im trying to make do without. Im thinking of adding a line in jack between the headunit and eq for a pda/mp3 player.

God i'm cheap.

very very nice alot of the 'tough' look comes from the white writing on the tyres i reckon time for EJ conversion, you will NEVER look back!!

An ej would be great but I think it's to much hassle for me to do, The donk that's in it only has 225k is quiet and blows no smoke so there still a few years of reliability left (I hope).
