the busiest day in this forum was four years ago, give or take a few months. Then, a few months later someone asked on another forum "is facebook killing forums?"

Could be famous last words but, can't see myself as a facebookworm, though suspect I am missing out on some good info going by snippets I've been priveledged to snoop at on FB.

Forums, especially this one, are pretty much dedicated to the interest and preservation of old and new interests. AUSubaru has an open slather for off topic posts. Looks like FB is evolving by the power of its users for one big central interest collective for the internet world (cyberspace) - of off topic posts!

The whole evolution and its continuing future of social media is likely an excellent topic for someones thesis.

Will all the wealth of information held within these forums be lost due to societies need for instant FB connection with others?

If a forum generates the money to exist from its advertising, what happens to the forums and data when they don't? Not easily accessed from some experience !

FB is easier and quicker but, you can't list threads you need to go through pages to find and open up threads.

Facebook is why I disappeared. Life got busy and Facebook was just quicker and easier to ask quick little questions in Subaru groups, or inbox/ private message friends that are also on here.
There are some good Subaru groups, Willy will know the ones i'm talking about.
However I'm back and plan to stay

In my opinion, FB will never compare to a forum like this in terms of amount of information available and ease of finding it. Yes I know the search function on here sometimes doesn't find what you're looking for, but the info is in here and you can usually find the solution to your problem without even having to post a question.

FB on the other hand, you couldn't find a topic that was talked about 2 weeks ago let alone 5 years ago. The group pages etc layout is just whatever someone talked about last, with each new comment pushing the older ones down the list. And it's full of complete newbies (nothing against them, we were all one once ) asking the same basic questions over and over. I do however like how easy it is to post pics on FB compared to a forum. You could write all the how to's in the world about how to embed pictures on a forum post but some still don't get it. It's much easier of FB so you can see many more interesting ideas and other people's projects.

It's an interesting topic, and to some extent, I think it is a generational thing...

Forums basically replicated Newsgroups, but were on the web, so benefited probably mostly from being easily indexed and shown in search results... They were also richer in terms of content.

So forums felt familiar to those of us that new newsgroups, and made enough sense to everyone else, and were easy to find by the precursors to and ultimately google. The open web was king, so forums went well.

Facebook isn't well suited for storing information, but you know I don't think forums are that great either tbh. In terms of technical info, we'd probably be better off with a wiki that multiple people contributed to. Then you could have the one page on how to do an EJ conversion that people could add to, update, fix errors, comment on etc... Generally they are harder to use than Facebook, and don't have got native apps for mobile, iPad etc (I use Tapatalk but f*ck me the UX is bad)

Anyway, what I find fascinating is there are active older forums like say Rexnet, but the 86/BRZ forums are a ghost town, BUT there is a massive 86 group on Facebook. I put this down to the age of the userbase. Rexnet is a lot of guys in their 30s like me, where as the 86 crowd seems to have shit loads of people around 20 that probably don't have a clue about forums!

So, in conclusion to this rambling, I think forums are ripe for being obsoleted by something.... Maybe not Facebook, as I think people like to keep separate discussions separate - I don't want to inflict excited posts about Subarus on everyone I know :P but they definitely aren't keeping up with the ease of use, speed, ux of other things on the web, so will get replaced eventually...

I like FB because I can log on easly at work and chat to family and friends instantly but this doesn't take me away from being on here. It's more to do with internet bandwidth for me whilst at work.

As for Facebook I find it interesting that Jonno - a self professed non facebooking old fart starts a thread along these lines

I too have the same concerns - the idea Mr FB, Dean N and I discussed was to link bookface users back to this site where the relevant info is...

Hopefully that will be enough to keep interest on the forums
