Searching for old posts

I have a little difficulty getting my head around that old posts go into archive. How do you view them again or do you have to search for them with the search tool? I would like to go back page by page if that possible, say if you knew what you wanted was only a month or two back.
At least this search function works as opposed to the last board version.
Your help please, or maybe a sticky for this.

you have to set your options to show all threads in your profile options.
