New Web Host ...

There have been several attempts by me & others to enable improvements to this forum, one of them was a new web page host.* see update ...
Thanks to 'spammers' we are to get a new web host ( link here ) ...
I for one certainly appreciate all the admins efforts to date & to look forward to the next era ... :)

It might also be a chance to do some housekeeping - any suggestions for improving the site ?

Add : Some Queries for Admin :
  • got a timeline for this happening ?
  • are you planning to upgrade to latest Vbulletin ?
  • going local or overseas for host ?
  • do you require assistance ?
I'm sure there are few who are more than willing to help, just let us know ... ;)

Cheers, Bantum ...

Update : As of Dec 2017 - The web site hosting problem has since been fixed - sadly the software running on it is still to be sorted though ...

Maybe just updating a few things. I've been away from this site for quite a while so not sure the current status of these things so just basing them out below in case they need attention.

In the Forum....

"The Backyard Boys" advertising banner
- When you click it, it directs to a webpage which doesn't exist. Does "The backyard boys" still exist itself?

Under "Suspensions - shocks, springs, and upgrades" there is a Sticky thread for "BYB Lift Kits" by Suby Wan Kenobi, which is an advert for lift kits to suit various cars, adaptor plates, bash plates etc with "Website coming soon".
- Are BYB or Suby Wan Kenobi still making lift kits? There seem to be a few threads recently with people struggling to find lift kits forsale.
There's also a similar Sticky in the For Sale section.
- Would be good to update these, I'm sure it will help sales etc.

Maybe evaluate some of the forum sections which are seldom used.
- Communication. Last post back in 2012
- Navigation. Last post back in August 2013
Perhaps merge them?

Main front webpage...

Gallery
- Is this used much? There seem to be very few albums here and it asks me to log in when I click on them, and my login fails anyway.

Traveller
- Is this used much? There seems to only be two events listed, from 2007 and 2008, neither with any actual content. Seems to be a bit redundant as there is a "Camping and Travel" forum section anyway.

Lift kits and Engine Adaptor Plates sections
- Indicates new webpage and online ordering system are under development but seems to have said that for years.
- Links to forum threads which don't exist any more
- Broken picture links
- Maybe redundant as Suby Wan Kenobi's forum threads may have taken over their purpose?

Tech Manual
- Goes to an error when you click it.

In General...

Perhaps use Capcha or something similar for registrations. Every other forum I go on seem to have spammers very well under wraps without too many issues. I guess this is currently under review right now anyway given very recent issues.

Thanks Andrew,

Yep there few things there that I concur with ... :p ( add to later )

Add : Do note that there are a few quirks between various 'style' modes like the moon addy on vb_style - not present on others ... ;(
( + a few others that I can't think of right now )

I also did a post some time ago with some stuff about BB code ... ( more when I find it )

Add : found here : showthread.php?t=22690

Note : I've also added some more Queries to first post ...

Hope this all helpful in some way ... :)

Gday Andrew,

Gr8 news for those wanting lift kits they just need to contact Paul (RSR555) as Paul will be doing lift kits along with repairs and mods, I have heard a whisper he is in the throws of developing a website for RSR Performance in Rockingham W.A where he will be listing his services.

Hope this helps

Cheers

+1!

I wouldn't mind seeing a completely new format.
Some other forums I frequent are so much easier to navigate and easier on the eyes, for example,

http://www.rslibertyclub.org/forums/
http://liberty.asn.au
http://www.subyclub.com
(To me they look like three different (better) forums)

I don't know anything about web hosts, but those forums ^ all seem to be a lot better presented. And if I'm honest, it is a big reason I don't frequent here as much, because this site seems dated, but the content is still valuable and unique to ausubaru

Hope this helps :)

I'm keen to see what the new site will be like!

Lol - now that is topical. The thread discussing updating the forum and protecting more against spammers has had a spammer post directly into it.

There were a few times a few days ago where the site didn't want to load, some sections worse than others and I kept getting "No connection" or "web page unavailable" messages. Seems to have cleared itself up by now.

Hi all,

The web site has been transferred to a new host Go daddy ( probably explains some of the problems we've had ) & now looking to progress next stage ... :)

I've been going over a few options & would like your feed back as to what direction we should take the site ...

- Clean up the site, but leave as is on vBulletin Version 3.7.4

- Update to a newer version of vBulletin Version 5 ?

- Go to another type of forum ?

Might do a survey on FB as we should be able to better integrate with it too. Definitely want to keep all the good / old stuff that's accumulated ...

Looking forward to being able to make some changes finally ... :)

Cheers, Bantum ...

I think an upgrade to Vbulletin 5 would be a good option. But how can we do this without outback_blokes blessings?

Yes - As I've just been in contact with him, he's tacitly given me some advice that it may be enacted on - now seeking the forums help to implement the changes ... :)

( It may take a while though, as I've got to find out how to do it )

Cheers, Bantum ...

The original site host has now been changed to crazy domains ...

It still remains a problem of contacting Brett to organise admin access ( I don't have direct access, other than through emails here & on FB )

Hope to have it sorted one day ...

Bit of an update for you :

Plan is to migrate the entire site over to a new system, there may be outages / loss of posts - so you might want to back up / close of any threads in the coming weeks ...

I'm not sure of the exact date yet, but it's coming soon ... ;)

Will keep you posted.

Bantum, if it's not possible to migrate this forum over to the new system, is it possible to clone it then host it on a sub domain or a dot domain? eg

archive.ausubaru.com

But lock it down so it can't be modified or hacked.

There's too much useful info to risk losing.

AndrewT is going to perform the migration and it will (as he has told me) be a complete transfer of the board to the new forums software.

If that isn't correct I'm sure Andrew will tell me off ;)
