forsale section

Post by AndrewT » Tue Jul 25, 2006 12:24 am

Just a suggestion which may help with the forsale section... There seems to be a big problem with people not following the template. Seeing as people must follow the template why not make it so when you start a new post, the template is already there for you to fill out and non editable - making it impossible not to follow the rule.
I don't know if this is easy or practical to implement but it would instantly solve the problem

Cheers,
a.

Once all set up with moderating again post will either be edited [if we feel generous] or simply deleted without warning as before.

I'm involved with this software on another forum (ie a guideline way, not software). We tried to set up a template for the classified section, but the software only allows a global template for new threads. ie for every new thread in every section, you cna't be specific.

I said it when this "system" got brought in last time.
It is a PITA, especially if you've got a really slow connection for whatever reason (renting, no landline, etc). I can have multiple windows open at a tim, but each one takes at least 1 minute to open.
Not everyone can afford the luxury of broadband.

It didn't get policed last time, so why not just save yourselves the effort?

You may be surprised how many posts were deleted , what has dial up or broard band got to do with posting in a manner that is easy to read in the forsale section , I cant see why you think it is a "pain in the ass".

The speed has a lot to do with it.
This is the process that has to be followed:
  1. open the sticky at the top of the page to get access to the template
  2. In my case, go off & do something else for a minute
  3. Highlight the text, and copy it
  4. Go back
  5. hit the "New thread" button
  6. wait another minute
  7. Paste the text & overwrite half of it.
5 minutes to do that bit & then I've got to try to put pic links as well.
And if in the meantime, I lose internet reception, I've got to start again.

And before you reply again, go check out the Toymods forum & see who's the mod for the Classified section ;)

you can just type the code as I did to edit your forsale post [b.] [/b.] inbetween the 2 boxes you type what ever you want in bold ie discription etc .
You dont put in the dots after the b though.

hmmm, yes ok, but what's actually different about it now?
All the info required was there before (admittedly I may have a higher expection of what info is needed for a saleable ad)?

I'm also looking at it from the point of view that I severely doubt that anyone on this forum is only on this forum. I'm on 4 car forums regularly, another 2 semi-regularly, & another 2 spasmotically.

Places like the Tradingpost don't require something like this (I can't comment about ebay because I've never sold anything on it), so different rules for different forums are annoying (you should see the crap I see from bitching about this:rolleyes: ). I just see this one as getting a little too specific.

People generally know what's needed to sell their stuff. If they don't provide the correct or sufficient info, they either get sick of the constant questions, or their item simply doesn't sell.

[/rant]
Admittedly, I extremely rarely have items that I would try to sell on this forum (mainly due to it either being of such poor condition that I'd just chuck it, or its not an item that people on here would buy)
Just want to give another point of view.

it's quite simple really, there is a particular way that the forum owner wants the forsale posts set up, if they aren't done in that way then they will most likelly be deleted or if someone is feeling charitable they may edit it for you, if anyone dosent like these simple rules they dont have to post.

Hey Wagonist, how do you manage so much on such a poor internet connection? :)

Usually got the computer working between fixing the car & house.
Come back every 5 mins & see what's finished loading.
And the internet connection at work is just a little bit faster ;)

The L series in the only car I've got any real technical knowledge about, apart from a brief stint with a 93 Legacy.
And the stuff I know about my import is pretty much useless to anyone else anyway

Oh, and I'm single & live by myself

Careful.....
Would you risk your job by doing that kind of thing at work?

Has anyone noticed that mobile reception seems to be crappiest at the top of hills? Its the same with wireless internet, too.

Alright kids stay on topic .... back to pretending we know what we're talking about and complaining about the draconian for sale rules!

For Sale rules should stand. If you don't agree with them don't post. Seriously, if you're selling so much stuff that you're sick of cutting and pasting you should have a banner at the top of the page.

My alternate suggestion: do what Tony from OL4x4 did and simply delete the whole "Marketplace" area until people decide to follow the procedure.
Monster Subaru sold to a good home!! Still a Subaru owner. Will try stay in the Ausubaru loop. Sorry
