Red pens are scarey....apparently

Bean Bags solve everything

And you don't have to know or play the national anthem in your islamic school because it might upset someone...???

Not starting a religous debate here so leave all name calling at the door. I'd like to hear what normal people think of these current changes in some schools....

What strikes me as funny is the people that are up in arms about the red pens when marking and want them banned went to school and had their exams marked in Red. So maybe there is some truth in it that it makes you some what ^%#ed in the head. I think they need some bean bag time themselves, that should fix them up real good and proper. Just don't steal their bean bag or they will chuck a tanty and go and dob on you.

As for the national anthem I think it is an embarrassment to Australia and is not suited to our nation. There are much better songs that represent us and make us feel like AUstralians. (I still call australia home gets my vote) It is our anthem though at this stage and as an Australian we are obligated to listen to it. Banning it in a school for what ever reason is wrong and the school should be reprimanded. If they keep it up, then close the school.

too right, heard on the radio thismorning some bloke is taking legal action for religious discrimiantion purposes because his kid was taught about the noah's ark story and its against his beliefs or some sh1t,

and no offense intended here, but some schools are starting to teach the native aboriginal language instead of japanese/chinese etc etc etc. given that there are about 220 aboriginal countries in australia and each have a different version of their language, i find it useless. Much better to teach a foreign language that the kids can use later in life when they travel.

sorry all this religious stuff annoys the hell out of me, soon it will be offensive to display the australian flag. like england is now and that makes me real angry....

government needs to harden the f@ck up, shoot some boat people, sink the illegal fisherman/whalers, tell the religious extremists to get out if they dont agree with what we say/do in australia.

and get rid of those china towns where no-one bothers to speak english!!!!!!

What are these ning noings doing to our kids?

No red pens, been bags in school, cookie monster no longer eats cookie's, the cane at school has gone, Baa Baa Black sheep is now white, the list go's on.

There is so meny things that we did and said when I went to school , but you can no longer do those things becouse someone mite get there feelings hurt, Tuffun up.

Who did not get sent up to the office to get the cutts? who did not get the blackbord ruler? and gess what? most of us that got the cane got it becouse we were mucking up, yeah? and we all turned out allright, did'ent we?

Now that they can not give out the cane the swearing has got worse, theres no respect anymore and there out of control.

Were just bringing up a bunch of out of control wimpy kids and there getting away with it.

We should get back to the fotten days when kids were kids.

Hey dibs, don't knock the aussie easter bilby - ever wondered why we celebrate fertility in autumn?!

Anyway, on topic, yes I agree with pretty much everything said here. As a teacher that was trained up this year I was very surprised to see that we are now at a point where you cannot fail a student, they are just at a lower standard (such as grade six standard when the student is in year 8, 9 or 10). It is a rather stupid way of marking.

To me how are we helping these kids for the real world after school??? There's no cotton wool out here for when they really fail/get beaten up at the pub/have their house re-possessed etc. This may seem a little over the top but I think that if you're brought up in a way that you can't fail, the first time you do and don't expect it will be quite a shock to the system...

The red pen thing is over the top and this is australia, if the school decedes to sing the national anthem, how does this offend a citizen of australia.

I remember when Jake was in primary school, mainly 1,2 and 3. If they tried to spell a word correctly, and the teacher could work it out through "phonics" ( I think thats right). They would not correct them and show them the real spelling. This was confussing, as the child would never be told other wise, until later in 5,6,and 7. When it was to late, the damage had set in. He writes like the laungage they use in text messages.
And these people get paid to screw up our kids.....

Basically I agree with all of you...there's a storm coming, no doubt about it.

I grew up in the 50's, 60's and 70's. I got the cane at school, red biro, slapped, whacked, put my hand on my heart at parade and watched the flag fly, sang the school creed etc etc..

There's nothing wrong with me....(Hang on, the orderly is coming with my pills, just a sec)

Anyway, yea. where was I...Ok.... so go get em tiger, bout time the ordinary bloke in the street (hospital) stood up and stopped the rot.

I agree with the National Anthem not properly suited to Australia. There are many better options.

I managed to graduate school red pens and all with no dramas so I think they should find something better to waste their time on!

Yep, and its usually the government that has the schools/teachers doing this. VELS - the victorian education learning standards, as I was briefly talking about in my last post in this thread, has been outlined by the victorian government and is used in all government schools with independant schools voluntarily taking it up before a set date that they have to take it up (which I think as passed now).

These people are also under paid... you try working with 30 clients with different needs for the best part of 6 hours of the day (some of which don't want to co-operate), the rest of the time you're deeling with detentions, marking, meetings or writing/preparing classes. Weekends and "holidays" go the same at times too. This is a very basic overview.

The best class I took on my rounds was when there were 12 students due to class excursions, 12 students are so managable in the classroom and would be a great number of students to work with - not that it'll ever come to that with class sizes.

End rant here, I'm surprised I'm still making sense...

im sure im speaking on the behalf of most of us here, i dont mind them coming into australia, but they need to obey our rules, obey our culture, speak our language and show some RESPECT.

I find it intolerable when they come here and whinge. It really is simple, if you dont like then **** off. Us aussies are known for drinking beer, being rough and okkering it up...its why we live here.

In the two schools I attended, primary and secondary, we sang the national anthem, raised the flag, said the lords prayer and had a school song which everyone was expected to learn and participate in. The secondary school I attended was an Anglican private school....but it also had hundreds of international students. So much so they started an international school for them for certian subjects, as some of their english wasn't the best. The rest of the time they attended class like us, got marked in red, didn't have a family to cry to or a bean bag to bludge on, and basically injected themselves into Australian life, or quietly went about thier business of attending and graduating school. This type of person is welcome as far as I'm concerned. The ones that moan and groan about our way off life can just bugger off to what ever motherland they came from if it's so much better. I know if I didn't like this country I'd find one I did like, live there and assimilate with the occupants.
I'll also put this out there. In 15 years time when these people have graduated school and uni, assuming they even make it that far/it won't be too hard for their poor little brains, how are they going to go in real life ?? When someone gives them a deadline, will they comply or just go home ?? Will there be ones who will become doctors, pilots, vets, engineers or alike or will we end up buying them in from India?? I've had enough, and I'm just getting angryer by the second. Lunchtime. Vacated the soap box....NEXT

It's not so much the words to the anthem as to the style of the anthem. To me it sounds very "whiney".

"I still call Australia home" says it all in 5 words.
