Jules, there are many ways to do that, and you know they're all wrong.

42. Just because.

Dane.
But only if you have 6 fingers on each hand.

people I just copied and pasted that from the page I linked too, don't blame me if the geniuses are wrong.

it is 41.
multiplication takes priority over addition (at least thats the best way i can think to explain it, and for simple stuff like that you can base it off bimdas) unless the brackets indicate otherwise.

any off you guys have a scientific or graphics calculator (actually your computer will have one too)? type it into that as it is written and it will tell you ;)

nice toonga, but for 1+√(-1)(-1) != 1+√(-1)*√(-1) LHS does not equal RHS. my calc teacher in yr 12 had a whole heap like this he used to make us find the fualts in.
this one
ashamed i tried to like the post.......................
or .9999=1
that makes much more sense

spot on with the proof there toonga and too GOD, good maths is beautiful, and too silverbullet some people do care about math, take for example the navier-stokes equations we use some simplified versions at uni but someone cared enough to offer a million dollars to whom ever can solve it along with the reimann hypothesis

And to think I wanted to be a maths teacher until calculus.....I'll accept 41, it's worth one mark - out of a whole lot of other unimportant marks in your life. And these days; I'll even give half a mark for the answer of 1.

Gees, go do something useful......

I didn't mean who cares about all maths, just this problem that doesn't lead to anything important (open for a bashing here ) I always thought of these as problems to make people argue with each other.

Yes....41...I remember this from school a long time ago and multiplication takes priority over the addition regardless of the brackets/no brackets.

And....three guys are out fishing and walk into a pub...Publican says rooms are $10 each so they pay 30 bucks. The publicans son takes them to their rooms but they decide to kip in just the one room. The lad goes back to his father and says they are all bunked down in the one room. Father says, that's only 9 dollars each. He takes the $30 and gives back a five dollar note. The boy changes this to five one dollar coins. He goes back and tell the three guys the story and gives them a dollar back each......and he puts the remaining two dollar coins in his back pocket.

Soooo....these guys have paid nine dollars each ($27) plus the lad has two in his pocket ($29...but there was $30???? where is the other dollar??? (Sorry to hi jack the thread.)

The $5 note was not change for the sale of the room night, the three dollar coins was. Dads pocket is still up $25, the sons stash of dollar coins is down by five but up in $5 notes so accounted for, the $2 change from the fiver needs to go back to dads pocket. You missing something from the old tale Trev?
