Bit of a late Xmas pressie for myself

I've been wanting one for ages, spent alot of time researching which one to get and which model will do what I want. I wasn't going to buy any cheap rubbish from Bunnings so splashed some major dosh today and bought this

It'll do all 3 welding processes up to a maximum of 175 amps (minimum 10) Has an inverter power supply so can plug into a 15A 240V socket and came with a whole load of goodies including a decent MIG torch, Stick electrode holder, a gas line and gas regulator/flow meter as well as feed rollers from .6 to 1.2mm wire. All in a decent carry bag

Also bought a 5kg spool of solid .8mm wire for all my panel steel.

Now all I need is to source a bottle of argoshield and I'll be ready to start busting some rust on the old wagon

Everywhere that has them sells this same kit for exactly $1k.

And that's the costly bit! You even pay rent on the bottle per year

You'll love the MIG, once you've got it setup right to do what you want you'll be cooking! If you need to change to another job that requires a different setup write down the settings for your last job! Painful when you forget what you had it setup for on a particular job!

Yeah, shop around to find somewhere that sells the disposable type bottle ( no rent )

Yes, gas is the costly part. I wasn't too keen on the small disposable bottles since I don't want to run out of gas halfway through a job. Looked around a bit and there aren't many places that do proper bottle rentals...so I have to go with BOC who have just upped their prices apparently

For a D2 sized bottle (knee height) is $90 something for the gas and $14/month rental. I'll go by the month because a whole years rental in advance costs too much, and this way I can stop renting it when I'm not using it.

I think you'll find that those other places are renting from BOC - they have the market cornered since they're really the only providers of gas products AFAIK

You'll loose out with the remaining gas in the bottle when you return it. I will guarantee that they won't hold the bottle for you for when you want it next - you'll have to get a new bottle every time.

air liquide is another supplier but charges were greater through them than the Bunch of c crowd last year 'bout this time

Never mind, I may have found a way to get the gas a bit cheaper. Can't believe I was gonna get charged $90 for a D sized bottle of gas, when someone I know gets the full sized bottle for $50!

What's going on here. They really do have the market cornered
