Leatherman tools

Post by lunatech » Fri Feb 08, 2013 9:40 am

Problems with Leatherman service.

The following correspondence reveals to me a real problem with Leatherman product warranty.
That said, I love their products and would encourage the use of them. However just don't expect to take advantage of any claimed warranty.

This is all in reverse order, so it may make more sense if you read it from the bottom up.

Your English is poor, and you are confusing. First you state that you usually can't always repair the P4, then you state that you will not know if you can repair it until you take a look at it, then you state that you can't repair it. Holy he[[, all it needs is the file. DO YOU HAVE ANY? IF YOU DO SEND IT TO ME AND I WILL FIX THE MOTHER@#$%^&!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Robert,

We will not know if we can repair until they take a look at the tool. If we can’t we would replace it with a PS4, we no longer have the P4 available. We can’t repair the P4 and you do not want it replaced we would send it back to you as is.

Sincerely,

OK, one more time. I have been sending this to [email protected], but maybe it just confused whomever was reading it and that's why I am being ignored. The next step will be to ask everyone I know for advice on what to do next.

Still wondering if you meant can or can not usually repair the P4. I just want to know. I am anxious to have it repaired if possible.

I wonder if your response has a misused word.(We usually can’t always repair the P4,) It just seems like an awkward phrase, I wonder if the intent is to say "can" ? It seems that you are saying either you usually can't repair or can't always, but both together seems like a typo.

Please advise

Hello Robert,

Thank you for contacting us. The P4 has been retired and replaced with the PS4. We usually can’t always repair the P4, if we can’t repair it we would replace it with the PS4.

I’ve attached the warranty return form with the instructions on how to send your tool in to us under the warranty.

Subject: squirt p4

Hello Sir of Madam,

My name is Robert and I received a squirt P4 as a gift several years ago. I love this tool, it has been a lifesaver on many occasions and always comes in handy,

Anyhow, the file got broken off of it and I was very sad to find out I could not buy another one as it had been discontinued, that is until someone told me Leatherman offers a warranty on it, I read the warranty on your site and am concerned that if I send it in for repair that parts may not be available. If you would please let me know if the part is still available and it can be repaired before I send it I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you for you time and consideration,

Robert

Hey Luna

You might want to wrap {QUOTE}, {/QUOTE} (Just replace the { with an [) so it makes it easier to read. :)

On the leatherman issue. Their service seems a bit 'out' there. I've had a strange, though more positive experience myself...

I owned a M.U.T. for some time and eventually I needed the pliers blades replaced (replaceable) and a new pocket-clip.

I emailed Leatherman and they insisted on my sending it in when all I wanted the spare parts to fit for myself.

Anyway, long story short, when it was sent back to me I was sent a Leatherman 300 with a bag of spares and a new all-leather holster for it...

I called them over the telephone this time and they apologized a lot and said they mixed up an order. I asked if they wanted me to send it back so I could get my M.U.T, they told me nonono and asked me to wait a few weeks. I said "okay" and hung up the phone.

About a month later I got a new M.U.T sent out in its box, and never heard from my original one again...

Weird.

Maybe if you haven't given over all your details you could make a new email address, fake name and have it sent to your friends address and start again with their customer service? (I've done this before when having a bad time with a company over email.)

I hope your Leatherman story improves, as they're great tools to take anywhere. :)

Glad to hear they made it right for you. They sent another email to me explaining that the P4 is not repairable because of the way it is constructed (riveted together). At least I finally got a straight answer. Well I guess I am on the hunt for a used one in good working order.

Sorry for venting, I just get upset when I can't get simple questions answered.

Interesting, I have been using Leathermans since last Century.
In the early days, I would just call them, tell them what I needed and they would post out the parts for free.
That stopped that about 5 years ago.

As I use mine (Surge) many times, daily, it wears out and the springs break.

Now I call up Leatherman, tell them whats happened, they ask me to post it in for evaluation (back to the old ST300 for a week or so).
The last two times I have done this, they just post back a brand new Surge.

Very happy with Leatherman.
But, they do need to see it first.
L serious, still.

When I was a paramedic and rescue technician supportingthe USAF & United States Space Command here in Australian (Woomera SA) in 1994, when attending a vehicle accdent and extracating a casualty, one of the USAF boys handed me a leatherman tool to use cutting the guy out of the rollover wrecked car. Never saw one before, I still have it. Whilst the blade is much thinner & a little shorter the only problem I've had is a pop rivet crapped itself on the leather pouch abut 3 months ago. This thing has been in continuous use for 19 years and is the best bloody piece of kit ever. I now have a second one.

No wonder the blade is thinner and shorter, cuttting up cars would be hard on it. :)

Worn out, send it back and see what you get.

I have worn out a few pouches, for my Leatherman, I have tried genuine and chinese pouches. Genuine lasts much longer. fleabay.

I've had 1 of these that I got for a present 17 years ago. Wouldn't know which model it is. You've got me thinking that I should try & get a few broken things fixed & sort out a new pouch. I never leave home without it.

As Leatherman is now easily available on the internet, just make sure you tell them that you bought it/given it from an Aussie Leatherman seller, or they will black list you. Then no warrantee.
As they all come from the same factory, its a bit strange, but I guess they are trying to cover the Aussie rip off price, although they have dropped a lot lately.

I've finally just got my first leatherman - not quite what I wanted but when it's given to you I really can't complain!

I wanted the full works one like what my dad has and my brother too (we found that one!). M&D got me this one on a trip so again, can't complain. It's got some great features that I like, the best one being that the knife blade is at the bottom of the handle when it's folded out for use.

Cheers

Leatherman stuff on fleabay is really cheap compared to shops.
I just ordered thishttp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/310583151222?ssPage ... 1423.l2649
Which would have cost twice as much in AUS.

These bits make my Surge into a very versatile tool.
Hey "Wooster" I got another spare pouch as well.

These will be added to my Aussie bought/Letherman replaced Surge.

None of my leathermans have come from Ebay or Aussie Suppliers... Each has come from American sites... Even with shipping they're nearly 50%-70% off Aussie retail prices?!

Also on the pouch side of things, though pop-rivets and leather look classier, the cordura/rip-stick pouches are tough as nails. Mine survived the pilbara and asphalting with little more than changing from shiny black to dull red. :p
