Possible future toy / conversion / headache..

Post by tim_81coupe » Mon Jun 26, 2006 10:12 pm

My housemate has made me an offer that I'm giving some thought to. I can have his 1988 Nissan Pintara wagon (good body & driveline, dead CA20E) if I pay the transfer and rego. Rego is due, and for six months its roughly $200.

So for $200 I can have this Pintara. I could probably wreck it and make the money back (has a brand new clutch in it), but my evil mind has started clicking over.

Ideas flooding in there are ranging from a simple CA18DET conversion to an RB30E or maybe even a smallblock Chev for the burnout pit. Wondering what other people think about it, should I go for it?

Bear in mind I have 3 cars currently, only 2 are registered though.

Basically everything from the engine back, including the driveline suck in that body. The Skyline offered a better combo stock.
Easy conversion comes to mind - RB20DET or RB25DET, just need to back it up with a decent box and diff. Heaps easier for rego if it was already a Skyline, not a Pintara.

Yeah that's right Roger, I beleive the rear axles have less splines than the Skylines and the gearbox is certainly quite weak. Only thing working in the Pintara's favour is they have shorter diff ratios available.

Just been talking about it with my dad, he's brought up the idea of just replacing the CA20, or swapping in a CA18 and selling the car as a runabout. The rest of the car isn't too shabby, if the motor was running it'd probably be worth around $1500.

Might do this and spend the money on something better, like a Yamaha Jog :P

With the CA18, I cant seem to recall anything that came out here RWD, that engine was usually a FWD transverse mounted, not what you want. But a few import engines can be found in the 180SX as a N/A, dont know what you would get one of these for?

The S13 Silvia's and 180SX's came out with CA18DE's and DET's (all 180SX CA's are DET's). The S12 Silvia and Gazelle also ran CA motors I beleive.

As for the CA20, the series 3 Bluebirds had them as well as the Pintaras.
