Been watching Road closures for today when this caught my eye:

New England Highway - at approximately 30kms south of Tamworth
Adverse Weather Conditions - Snow
RTA advice: Road is icy, motorists are advised to exercise caution.
Affected direction: Both Directions
Response: Police Attending

The height predicted in Singleton is higher than it has been in over 30 years!

And revised at 11:05am - The peak prediction for midnight has gone up by .3 in an hour

Looking at the current height of the river and the time, it seems that the predictions are pretty much spot on! Pretty scary when the major flood of 1955 peaked in Singleton at 14.6 meters!!!!! Once over the new 14.55 meter levy banks the town is screwed! Once the flood waters rise to 14.1 meters, no one is getting in or out of Singleton!

What has happened in the past...

14.7 Water flows across railway line into John Street south (main street).

14.6 Peak height February 1955 flood with 1250 homes flooded over
floor level.

14.55 Design height of Singleton levee. If a height of 14.55m is
predicted you should prepare your property for flooding.
Evacuations need to be completed before a height of 14.1m is
reached at which height all evacuation routes are lost.

14.1 Peak height February 1971 flood. Backwater flooding begins to
flood Singleton from the east. Glenridding and Dunolly
completely flooded. Last evacuation route out of Singleton lost.

13.9 Darlington Road may be closed.

13.7 New England Highway south at Doughboy Hollow may be
closed.

13.3 Peak height March 1977 flood.

13.0 Major flood classification. Water begins to enter Glenridding
and Dunolly

12.5 New England Highway north may be closed between
Bridgeman Road and White Avenue.

12.0 Extensive local road closures including Scotts Flat, Combo Lane,
Whittingham Lane, Racecourse Lane, Army Camp Road, Putty
Road and the Old New England Highway at Dunolly.

11.5 Moderate flood classification. Significant agricultural lands on
the floodplain inundated.

10.0 Minor flood classification. Farmers with livestock and
equipment will need to be moved from low-lying land.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS:
5:50pm

Low lying areas of Singelton and its outskirts are being evacuated. People in town are being advised to start moving by the SES but it is not at this stage a necessity....There is about a 95% chance they will get their feet wet but not sure how far it will go up buildings.
The Heights where we are, darlington, and hunterview are almost completely cut off from the town itself. There is only 1 road left to evacuate to higher areas other than the highway towards branxton. There is an inland lake along Bridgeman road. There was a car that had broken down on this street which is now totally invisible. The give way sign (we know how high they are) is also not visible. The river is no longer visible as a single lane anymore it is an inland sea with lake/billabong pockets! Photos will come very shortly.

Just as a refresher, the 1955 flood reached 14.6....... We are expected to reach 14.1 (this figure had been slowly rising to the current prediction through the past 12 hours so it may rise again). Once the river reaches 14.1, the water starts backflowing from the east side of town, drowning it from all sides...! Gee I am glad I am on a hill!

Expected peak from SES is just under an hour. 14.03 at the moment, only another 7cm to go!!!

Flood Warning Number : 10

The Hunter River flood at Singleton peaked at 14.04 at 11.20 pm [on the automatic river gauge] and is now falling slowly, causing major flooding. Local information indicated that the flood peak was slightly higher than the automatic gauge reading, however this is not expected to have a significant effect on flooding at Singleton or downstream forecasts to Maitland.

Major Flooding, similar to the February 1971 event is also expected and Maitland.
