Back on topic...plastic plates
It'll take about 6-8 weeks for our new plastic replacement plate to arrive. In the meantime, we've had to pay for metal (and yes they really are tin/alfoil) substitute temporary plates.
I think when we get the original front + replacement rear I'll cover the back with 'Contact' - if it won't interfere with e.g. the actual printing. So if they break in some way at least they shouldn't fall to pieces and on the back it shouldn't interfere with visibility. I'd suggest the shards could be quite sharp (I didn't see them myself) and therefore a hazard.
The plastic slip the metal ones came in had a couple of instructions pertinent to this discussion, esp. regards cutting injuries as pointed out:

1. The plates should be fitted FLUSH to the vehicle.
2. If a plate overhangs a vehicle it is recommended that protective plastic surrounds be fitted.
"

A 'friend' had some NSW personalised black and white plates made up by a vinyl applicator on perspex in a jiffy for a few hunge, got reprimanded by a copper who claimed they were not legal due to not being reflective material. Who selects these guys to be coppers these days ?? White on blacks still do not reflect light in the dark any more than gloss white or black anything does !!
