The Hummer put me off for a few reasons: 1, it's made in the USA (the G is made in Austria); 2, it's very very wide. Actually the USMC are phasing out their HMMWV in favour of the IFAV (that's Marine speak for G-wagen). There is also a good chance the Australian Defence Force will be replacing their Land Rovers with G-wagens too under Operation Overlander.

I also love Mercs. I used to believe Subaru were the best designed and built cars in the world - until I owned a Merc.

So far as fuel economy goes it doesn't look too bad - when it arrived I was shocked to find that it wasn't a G320 at all but a diesel! Fuel consumption at this stage seems about the 11-12 L/100 range but I haven't filled it up yet.

Compliance was looked after buy a group in Brisbane, who actually sold me the car in Australia so I didn't have to look after any of the crap that usually goes with such an importation. All I needed was a Blue Slip and some number plates to register it in NSW.

LOL my brother thought P-diddy had come to visit when I rocked up at his place. Sorry no plans for 24s, but an AMG 5.5 liter Kompressor engine would slot straight in there. Hey, after an EJ conversion how hard could it be?

now that is a vehicle that will stand out on the road, but not many other subie fans are likely to look at you. forgive me if i never wave back ! easiest way to keep a black car look clean enough - never wash it in the first place.

Diesel huh ? Forgot to ask did you, in all your excitement. What is Denco Diesels number for a 'kit', you know t u r b o, or is it already ??

sweet ride!

the G-wagon is what we use for our military here... ours aren't very nice but they get the job done!

a neat tid bit of info... all the g-wagons come from the factory with armour plating on the bottom to protect from landmines... you should feel safer now... :P

and i'm hoping now you're going to make a monstrous suby trail rig and use the g-wagon to tow it to the off-road spots... :D

i like them but they are far to much money...

hummers are the SUCK... http://www.fuh2.com/

I wouldn't put money on that assumption just yet. (ADF to buy G)

Although the ADF put together very rigorous, detailed and comprehensive evaluation programs when buying new major equipment, very often the decision is made on political grounds rather than data from these evaluations. Therefore, the decision has to be benificial to our American, British and Canadian political relationships and also within marginal electorates where the decision could sway votes.

However, the 110 Land Rovers will be with us for some time yet.

The ADF tested the G-Wagon when project perentine (sp?) was conducted which bought the 110 into service. It (the G-Wagon) would have been an excellent choice, as a number of parts were interchangeable with the Unimog, that had just been bought into service. However, an already strong relationship with JRA (Jag - Rover Aust) and the fact that the 110 would have been built at Moorebank (marginal electorate) help get it over the line, even with the inefficient Isuzu donk in it!

However, all this is a bit off subject.

Congrats on the new wagon - I love the G's. I hope to catch up with you and see it in the flesh when we move back to Canberra (hopefully in around 12 months time)

Cheers,
