Cockroaches , seems to be a fitting topic for Australia Day ! I know of a European migrated couple that went back home because the wife could not tolerate the black cockies in Sydney !!

I was born here and I can't stand the little bastards either. The other night I squashed one underfoot on the way to the loo in darkness
- crunch -aw yuck !!
I am not feeding them or supplying them with hydration but they insist on kicking around the house including the fruitbowl, for chrissakes !

Hey ! where'd the banana go ?

So, I am looking for suggestions for home made cocky traps. I think we can use toothpaste or toothbrushes for bait , but not mine as I now keep them in the safety cell - good old tupperware.

I have a coupla http://www.tomcatbrand.com sticky flat traps inside, sprayed genetic modifying spray outside, and still the little %$#@s get in

Anyone know of the icing sugar and spackle mix formula and if it really works ?

Or a better method would be welcome

If we can devise a trap as good as the cheese in a long neck hanging over a bin full of water - for mice..we'll be larfing!!

You could alternatively use:
A) a shotgun for a bit of fun
B) get a jack russell
C) flame thower to light things a bit

We have three jack russells and 2 cattle dogs and the little bastards get past all of them. I think we just have to ride it out until the plague is over!
Has anyone tried that baygon protector stuff from Big W? I'm not game to spend 40 odd bucks on a couple of bottles to surround the house if it's not gonna work...

I got best results from some roach bombs then surface spray all doors, windows, openings, etc.

Surface spray usually last around 6 mths, you can tell when it stops working.

Geckos!

The little buggers eat anything that moves including cockroaches, moths, stink bugs. They just don't care. :)
Only trouble is they poop the leftovers everywhere :(

i saw this on tv so it must be true.....lol

get and empty margarine container, grease the inside walls with margarine put something sweet in the bottom, like wine, port etc

the margarine on the sides stops the roaches from getting out again and they end up drowning or really drunk.

Got me beat where all the geckos are coming from these days. We never had any here 2 years back. Now you can't walk through a room at night without seeing atleast one. As Clint said though, we have not seen a cockroach for months now.

I know that in the States you can get portable lasers that really do damage, burn holes in paper etc. Now all you need to do is order one and then blast away. you can get more info here. :)

And here is the companys website http://www.wickedlasers.com/

Now to increase my credit card limit :)

Ditto to the Geckos here. But the little sods do a damn good job of keeping my shed clear of spiders and cockroaches. For the sake of an odd crap every now and then.. and their odd chirping noise - I don't mind them if their attacking the pests.

some good ideas there to go on

gee's that laser might leave a few holes here and there and a burnt cocky smell too, I'd imagine

I think a Jack Russel might leave bigger mess than what the cockies make

I was hoping a few sponsored huntsman would sort things out but they only seemed to interested in getting it on with each other so they were turfed out

Roach bombs, surface spray and the like - after seeing a guy develop an allergy and then having to live too basic a life after his dad sprayed the house with a common pesticide, I am a bit hesitant to use the stuff

I am gonna try equal parts plaster of Paris and icing sugar and a water bowl for the drink they will need afterwards....but I have a windscreen to change over first, then hassle REPCO about a CV shaft under warranty........

thanks for the suggestions

We just have the mortein bait stations all round the house. There is a lot more dead cockroaches around here than livies...

Wonder how livies go for bass bait?

One we found by sheer accident was a bottle with alittle bit of auto transmission fluid in the bottom. We replaced the hydrulic fliud in a boats hydro steering and left the bottle in the corner on the floor overnigt
the next morning the dam thing was nearly full of dead cockys.

We have professional traetment done on a regular basis

So just to see what happens we emptied the bottle and put fresh fluid in and yes it continued to catch cockys.
Dont know whats in it but cockys are attracted to it.

Despite "professional treatment " the auto trans bottle is still qiute effective, now a permanent fixture in the shed.

twc,
when you say "bottle", is that a real glass one or the plastic one that the fluid was in?

Used oil left in a container after an oil change seems to attract all sorts of bugs I found (mainly moths) by the time I got to empty it out! Oils aint oils.

tranny fluid eh ? I'd try it tonight but don't have any - no need until now

used oil might attract the other bugs as a reflection of light

found mortein traps to be good in the past, RAID brand to be useless cause the opening is too small for the black cockies to get their shoulders through

tranny fluid ?? worth a try !! thanks, Jono
