Did anyone watch 4 corners tonight?

Post by Silverbullet » Mon May 30, 2011 10:07 pm

I didn't watch all of it, just the last 15 minutes. All I can say is, I'm embarrassed to be associated with Australia at the moment. It was absolutely disgusting and just pure animal torture :(

Live cattle trade ... I could say they have a nack of filming for months to get the footage they need but still it doesn't warrant the treatment of the animals.

live animal exports are a very touchy subject Im against it as Ive found dead animals on the beach up in Perth and I could tell that the animal was in bad shape before it became bait

saw the last 10 minutes or so. Knew it was gonna be on so tried to avoid it because I can't stand that sort of thing. What I saw disgusted me when I saw that last animal shaking in terror watching the others being slaughtered. Surely we can't condone any of this just for the sake of money. Civilisations I feel will be judged on how they treat animals and their own sick and elderly. Sorry for being a bit heavy but this sort of bull...t belongs in the dark ages and the exporters here that participate in the practice should also be held accountable. My 10 cents.

Well said guys. I have worked with cattle and it is easy to see those poor beasts were very distressed. The thing that really winds me up is this cruelty is done in the name of religous belief, how can those people think that their god would want them to treat one of his greations so discompasionatly? I don't mean to offend anyone but that story really rang my bell.

That's true about the animals having to be slaughtered still alive (ie no stunning allowed) but I've been told that slaughtering them in from of the other animals and torturing them so much is even more against that religion (Islam or Muslim I think). I could be wrong but apparently the book says the animals have to be calm and relaxed etc.

I was surprised to find this morning, less than 12 hours after that was aired that the minister that is supposed to deal with this has ordered an inquiry/ could lead to massive changes to the industry or shutting it down altogether. Weather that actually happens or not is another matter. But I very much hope that this kind of animal torture's days are very numbered.

Having observed the halal Slaughter of animals in Singapore and Australia, when it is done properly the animal suffers little and as well is on its own in accordance to the laws governing the slaughter.

The practises I saw from the footage on Youtube (yep it is there I'm not putting it here) are in fact not halal slaughter. While they may be similar the undue stress and treatment of the animals means that the people running the slaughter house are not practising halal slaughter.
Islam advocates merciful treatment of animals. Hence, animals must be treated such that they are not stressed or excited prior to slaughter. Holding areas for cattle should be provided with drinking water. Excessive use of electric prods or sticks must be avoided if the animals get overly excited with such tools. Animals should be nourished and well rested. For proper preslaughter handling of animals as well as restraining for slaying, use of ritual slaughter guidelines is recommended.

I didn't get to see the full show yet but watched the the you tube clip from animalsaustralia and I really don't feel like eating roast beef for tea !
I am outraged , apalled , angry and upset
I worked in a large beef abattoir in Katherine nt a few decades ago , I worked as a fitter on the slaughter floor , at the time we were "processing " around 600 head of cattle a day . I worked from 4.30 am until anything up to 9pm everyday and I've never witnessed anything like the cruelty in that clip . There was no part of the process that warrants treatment such as that . I feel physically sick after seeing that!

I too have seen " proper " Halal practiced - and that ain't it fellas!!!!

I don't really want to give the subject a lot of oxygen although it is good that the community is discussing the program and condemning the industry. However, Toonga is right on the money. Halal as I understand is a certification that assures the muslim community that the food has been prepared in accordance with their beliefs and that any animals involved have been handled with respect and dignity, and thanks given for them and what they have provided. Anyway, lets hope that the Australian community continues to be outraged and applies the necessary pressure to have it cleaned up or the trade stopped.

Me too, it's the first time I've come away from the TV actually feeling sick in my stomach :(
From hearing the news tonight, there's a ban on sending Aus cattle to 11 of the abotoirs in the footage, with talk of completely banning all trade of live cattle to Indonesia. It can't happen soon enough IMO.

Banning the live export trade to Indonesia (or everywhere as Animals Australia advocates) will do nothing to improve the welfare of cattle in Indonesia. This huge population needs to eat and will simply source their livestock elsewhere. It may make some Australians feel better but the mistreatment would continue.

It must be emphasised that the vast majority of cattle slaughter in Indonesia is done humanely in clean, well designed premises. Our authorities are responsible for the improvements made over the last 10 years but they admit they still have a long way to go.

No animals should ever be subjected to the sickening torture we witnessed last night but while we remain in their industry we can do more to educate, boycott, lobby and change their barbaric customs than if we leave them be.
