Air cleaner price shock

So Im back from an excursion to town with my daughter in tow, who by the way loves going shopping for tools with daddy.
I priced a ryco air cleaner for my vortex part number a345 which came in at $35.99 hmmmm me thinks... I wonder if they have a part listing for the K&N air cleaner. 332010 I think was the part number, of course being country none in stock. the nice lady rang Perth $172.95 and wait for it $13.95 freight.
My daughter said NO in a very stern voice... the girl behind the counter nearly peed herself laughing.
I thanked her and she thanked me and Meme for making her day.
I already have a project in play with some filter mat that cost 17 dollars for nearly half a square metre. it is specifically designed for air filters for cars.

Yeah.. hard to work out how they come up with those prices?? I think even the STi one in the 22B is cheaper than that and it's a foam/cloth type.

I believe they use a chocolate wheel
I have found a used K&N air filter in the US for 25 dollars just waiting to see if he will ship to Australia

I've been told that one of the bommerdore's air filters are the same as the EJ/L series MPFI for about $10 less

I think it was a VN...

Hmmm, you all think that's bad? At least they are engine air filters.
Take the Forester Diesel. It's &*@% $89 for a filter and it's not even for the engine- it's the #^$*&% aircon @*^^&$ #@&$! pollen filter that no-one %(A^&@! wants anyway! ***
And expected every *#^$% 12 months! Grrr! And they charged me without warning...
If anyone's figured out what material to get (HEPA filter of some sort?) and how to exchange it into the current frame/housing could they please let me know? Or an aftermarket one?
*** Sorry. It seems I confused the ((@&#^ hashes with the alphabet keys on my keyboard.

as long as the K&N filter isn't over oiled (or oiled for that matter) they are not a problem
HEPA filters are great if they are made of materials that withstand repeated washing otherwise they degrade and let larger particles through
still looking into my project as well

hahaha i thought so
But wouldnt you be glad if you have to follow a cattle truck or rubbish truck? Or a passenger unwittingly pollutes the air (never the driver lol)

You think that's dear?, then you had better start putting some big dollars aside for the DPF for when it has to be replaced then, I believe it's up around the $3k mark.

A360 is used in most VL-VT Commodores and early EJs. MPFI L Series use A345, which is much less common and more expensive.
An A360 can be made to fit the L airbox with some foam packing.

Hmm, yes, quite right! I've seen that quote somewhere else... had forgotten it was a filter! Cost was also in Euro I think, making it worse.
I've decided either:
a) DPF Prices will drop as aftermarket ones become available- any exhaust place will do a catalytic converter now, the same should be true for DPFs in the future.
b) I'll trade out of the vehicle before I reach that point- I'm lucky enough to have that option. Alternatives are becoming (or are already) available.
Couple of documents point to some reasonable lifetime expectations for light-duty DPFs: min 100,000 miles/160,000kms (tested) and 120,000 miles (~193,000 kms) mandated in USA. Heavy duty vehicles run much further.

Note these papers/talks all predate Euro5, one as far back as 2004. Predicted technologies then are now in production. I imagine the Europeans would kick up a big stink if/when their DPF-equipped vehicles age and start requiring new DPFs.
