Got a fkn job!

Post by Venom » Wed Feb 22, 2012 8:09 am

Just got my first grad job after finishing my geology degree 18months ago. Had a go at doing Honours afterwards but failed spectacularly, oh well.

It is a drill core logging Geology position for Xstrata in Mt Isa. Not the most exciting jobs in the world, but it is one of the best paid grad positions in the industry. They've got about 25,000m of core backlogged and another 90,000m to be drilled this year so plenty of work. Pretty happy because Xstrata have a good rep in the industry and make an effort to train and mentor their grads properly which is what i was after.

Best part is my girlfriend (also a Geo) has got one of the other 3 positions that was available. They are putting us on the same 4/2 FIFO roster out of Melbourne! Could not have found a better deal for the two of us. Really happy that i'll still be around for Vic trips.

:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

[EDIT] Sorry inappropriate thread title, but i can't change it...

Core logging? *shudder* brings back memories of being a vaccie.

Xstrata is a good company to get in with though. Owned by the evillestof evil multinational conglomerates :cool:. Congrats.

When does the next round of car mods start?

Congratulations Rhys, super that you and your girl will be on the same roster - it'll make life so much happier and easier for you both!

Good luck and congratulations on your 'first real job' after uni, it always feels great to be working in the field you trained in for so long.

Good stuff. I know in my youth I wondered why ?? TH a class mate went to study geology , took a few years to realise the importance and a few more to realise the benefits. He was smarter than I gave him credit for !

Yep 4 weeks on 2 weeks off, not a bad roster. 10 hour days, 6 day weeks with saturday off. My g/f was doing 14 days straight of 12 hour days last year so she is happy with this change.

Geology is a good practical science if you like the chance to be outdoors, its a big reason why i chose it. Plus there are more jobs than geologist which is a good position to be in.

Does this mean the MY will get a lift and be in attendance on the next 4wd trip? It'd be awesome to see both the lib and the MY wagon out playing at the same time... I guess that'll all depend on your better half?

Cheers
