So I jump in the old MY to go to work today. Grrrrr,grrrrr,grrrr.ticktickticktickticktick. "(insert colorful language here)". So I grab the bench supply and jump start her up.

Driving down the road, about 2 klicks out from home and Doooorrrrrrrrrrr. conks out in the middle of the road while Im waiting for the light. "(more colorful language here)". So i give her a crank, and grr grr grr grr tik tik tik tik tik (mind you I knew the battery was stuffed ). "(lots and lots of colorful language here)". So I push it off the road.

After some messing around with my brother, I have a new battery fresh from repco and Im parked down at the intersection with both my vortex and wagon. Pop the new battery in and she fires up, idles for a sec and dies again. By now Im getting pretty pissed off, so I jump out and pop the top off the weber. Hmmm whats this thing here. One of the air jets in the top had wound itself out and was sitting inside the hole. Popped it back in and bingo, fired right up and idled like a champ. At this point I had two options. Take the vortex to work and the wagon home or visa versa. I took the vortex home .

Walked back down to the intersection, around 2 kms. Jumped in, fired her up, slapped her in gear and Cough cough splat. Out goes the lights. "(more colorful language here)". jump back out and blowing out jets, messing around, starting it up. cranking cranking cranking. Eventually my new battery is flat too. Called my brother again and while I was waiting I noticed the fuel pump wasnt ticking. Pop the hose off and Bingo, the fuel pump has failed in the time between getting a new battery and screwing the jet back in. "(way too much tasty language now)".

SO around 20mins later with new pump at hand and a battery from home, stick the pump in, jump the new battery and what do you know, spare battery is flat. . Another call to the brother, Another battery from something and Bingo, Im off to work.

What are the chances of having a jet wind out of my carby and my fuel pump crap the bed in a 30 min period. Im also pretty sure that jet is for mains. Anyway, thought its worth a laugh.

Easy to laugh now I guess but I you certainly did have a crap day.
Where did you end up getting the 2nd pump from ?

Second pump was from supercheap. Pump is a Goss GE239. Confirmed 4 1/2 psi fuel pressure with my diag gauge.

It was crap, but if I dont laugh it just makes it seem worse.

Just for shits and giggles, I popped the jets back out at work, blew everything out with compressed air and assembled it again. Test drive and lean idle retune and everything seems good again. Probably was crap in the carby all along.

Oh and I found out why the fuel pump failed.....it was Mitsubishi branded .

Man I hate the feeling that comes with being stranded by an old subaru, trying to figure out why it won't start or run or whatever. If it were me I probably would have smashed something in a blind rage.

But when all is said and done you look back, laugh and post the story on a forum for others to chuckle at

What a bugger mate! Yes, it was good for a laugh - all that colourful language, I could just imagine the storm cloud brewing above your head that those points!

I bet you owe your brother big time now... I doubt mine would have that sort of patience with me.

Doug, have you checked your FL's to make sure they don't upset your Friday ?

Thankyerself you didn't have to wait for a member service vehicle and accompanying tow truck ride. I'd have driven the Vortex safely back home to !

Yeah, more pissed off at myself for not biting the bullet and buying a new battery before that one caused me grief. As for everything else deciding to pack it in, well I had trouble with my fuel pump before where it got hot and stopped working. Ever since then Ive run a dual pump arrangement with a surge tank (brought on my other projects) and it hasn't missed a beat. I donno if its the original fuel pump but if it is my hat is off to it. 380K is enough. It was also all the screwing around I had to do. Get picked up, go to repco and get battery, go back to car, go home, walk back to car, battery goes flat (new battery wasn't charged, only to storage capacity, lasted a whole 30 seconds ) Get picked up again and off to supercheap to get a pump, back to car, call brother back out to bring another battery. Bloody nightmare.

Yeah I owe him some favors now, though When he goes out on the piss Im usually the designated driver .

On the way home, Pruuud like a kitten .

Steptoe, fuel filter looks pretty clear, may be worth a blow out though. Don't need the wagon tomorrow so back to the vortex. I donno, I kinda like driving the old MY better.

Good info on the fuel pump.
Are we talking about the MY electric pump that sites up under the bonnet on the LH side against the fire wall ?

and forgot to mention, pump came with a 24 month or 40000km warranty.

They're the best ones to get stuck with - less things to have gone wrong! Try nutting out an EFI issue on the side of the road, especially if you know you've got a wiring gremlin!

In that case I think he's still owing you - this is what happens with my brother and I always seem to be in his debt!! But now I've got Mrs El Freddo to drive me around, but she sometimes gives me unpleasant stares unlike my brother...

Old subies are deffinately the best to stop with. Pour fuel in, crank. Did it fire?
