My girlfriend has a 92 Twin cam 2L Camry and has just clicked onto 300K
I think its about time the timing belt was changed, the sticker that shows when it was last changed has faded and cant be read.

Now, I figure that it shouldnt be too hard. I just have to be careful to make sure that the timing is spot on first time.

Anybody got any tips and tricks for me?

its a pita.when i had mine got 3/4 of the way thru it and call a mobile mechnic to finish the job i had stripped the teeth of the belt left it to long.Subes are way easier.

i have done it before and yes it is a pain...motor must come out to do it right but thats just the start of the fun

So it really is that hard?

A quick chat to a guy from tafe that used to work for a toyota dealer said just to undo the drivers side engine mount and jack the engine up one side. that gives better access.

What were some of the problems that you encountered?

Is it worth doing it myself, or should i save myself the hassle and just pay somebody to do it.

Your right postie,.. subes are easy, ive had the belts off mine twice this week to get to the oil pump (damn ticky lifters)

after the one i did i would pay someone to do it....if it,s your first time...there is just no room to see or do anything and the crank pully needs to come off and on a camry that can be a nightmare itself...i guess if you take your time and double check everything you should be right but i would never do another one

To do it successfully you need to drop the motor out. Its a prick of a Job

you dont need to drop motor out ive done heaps of them..pull the engine mount out as your friend told you.... take the alternator off as well and undo the power steering resivour and move it to the side then you can get in there... Warning some of the bolts are hard to get at and double check your timing marks..Wind the motor over a few times by hand when the new belt is on and recheck the marks line up... check your water pump to hey there usually start leaking after a new belt has been put on....

Leave it to the experts I say, if something fails or goes wrong they pay not you..........can't go past warranty work, that's if Toyota give a Warranty on their service work.

I tried mine on a VL Commodore a few yrs back and they are easy to get too, ended up getting the Mechanic from work to finish it as I had misread the way they count the teeth on the belt and it was out of whack PITBA.

the drop engine jack up method does work my mate has done it a few times still a pita.

I had a talk to the guy today, he said he used to do them in a little over an hour. I dunno about that.

He told me that it would be easy, but now i dont know what to think.
He also suggested i change the crank and oil pump seals while im at it.

I will have another look at it tomorro and make a decision.

just buy atiming belt kit they come with all the seals and new idler pulleyes as well..i can do them in an hour but ive done a fair few and im a mechanic so ive had a lot practice...have a go at it if all else fails get a mechanic to fix it...

I don't know how to change a timing belt but my camry is for sale if anyone wants to buy it for their kids before they let them loose in a suby!
