sounds like a good inspiration. i wish i had me one of those.
i just started pulling little stuff apart once i got this current wagon, now the stuff i pull apart just keeps getting bigger and bigger! one day my head will be too big and i want be able to put it back together!

Nah, not an uncle like that in my family.

My dad taught me most of what i know about cars and pulling them apart/putting them back together. The rest of my subaru knowledge mainly comes from here, at least the inspiration for it does.

Dad showed me an engine rebuild at the age of 10, it was a 71 mini. The same one my brother now has possesion of and is in the throws of a complete rebuild ground up.

After this we got a VW paddock bomb - looked nothing like a VW except for the engine and gearbox layout as it had been cut up to look like a dune buggy. We rebuilt the engine on this together, and i learnt a lot when we were trying to get it to go.

We then got a kombi paddock bomb, I rebuild the engine after it dropped a conrod while idling (we got it from the tip, a complete car with the engine inside the car rather than where it should have been. Started first go, idled for about 10 minutes before stopping with a cluck).

Dad got a 71 torana after that for his commuter car. I was pretty proficient with different things by this point. I ended up with the car, converted it to manual, replaced the rear main oil seal a couple of times (dodgy rope seals), it went back to auto for a little bit then back to manul before being stacked, I learnt about panel beating and was (unfortunately) getting good at it after mum hit a roo in it. Just as i was getting that sorted and looking like a torana again, a mate rolled the car. This was how i ultimately got my subaru cos if the torana wasn't rolled i wouldn't have been open to suggestions - a mate has an L that we went 4wd'n in tassie with, i fell in love with them and now i've got my own.

So there you have it, there've been many bits inbetween of other cars, trying to keep them going, sorting out wiring etc.

So to sum it up, no uncles who are really mechanically minded like this, but I do have one who's awesome with a mig and an idea Hopefully some of it will rub off on me...

PS it was my job to check the oil and water in the car since i've been in primary school...

i blame my grandfather on my subaru obssession.

he went through about 10 subi's when i was young, some of which included chopping two different MY sedans in half, and re-welding them together we sold that particular one about 5 years ago with 420,000km on the clock, and we still see it driving around!

if only he was still around to see what we are doing to them now!

a bit off topic but did anyone see that outback on today tonight last night that had been 'cut n shut' ie 2 cars into one and others, what dodgy bastards whoever is doin that stuff to new cars now. no offence alex.
