fuel consumption - subes and other makes

Being a Ford fella with a six that did a true 30 miles per gallon on petrol at its best and 21 litres to 100 miles [160kms] on LPG on the highway (metric pumps and imperial speedo ?? ) I always expect better out of four cylinders - but don't get it. They spin almost twice as fast at half the capacity ?? Old ford does about 2000 at 62.5 MPH (100 clicks)

Now 26 MPG out of a twenty year old 1.8 turbo 3speed auto is 11 litres per 100km i think - ain't that great but neither is when i read journo reporting same consumption for the new 2.0 4 speed auto Impreza

what sort of MPG, km per litre or litres per hundred km do you get outta your subes or other , petrol , lpg or diesel ? PLEASE don't say " I get 700km to the tank" 700km to 60 litres is acceptable !!

my 2.0L liberty uses under just under 8L/100km on highway driving, and about 9L/100km around town.

wagon (ej22) uses a bucketload(not sure on exact stats) but i'd be around 13-14L/100km. I blame it on the lift, and big tyres

I average about 8.6L/100km (700km from 60L) out of my 2.5L 5MT Outback (close enough to stock but with 220,000km's on the clock) just towed a 600-800kg trailer
from Wollongong, up Macquire Pass (I love that road

), on to the Hume, M7 and Pacific Hwy to Coffs Harbour and only lost 50km out of my 60L 9.2L/100km, I was quite impressed.

That being said, when I first got my Outback and drove it like I needed to drive my old MY (ie: all the way to redline) it used 20L/100km of Optimax when it cost $1.65/L, scared the hell out of me.

My bros auto commodore wagon does much better on the highway then the family 1.6l toyota hatch and my lib wagon. His commodore easily cruises on 140km at just 2500 Revs.
My lib however needs a tune i think, because i certainly get no where near 700ks, I average about 450ks with mostly highway & country driving.

Going as best as I can with calculating the change in tyre size and distances covered, I've returned between 11.2 and 13.5L/100kms depending on the load and condition of the spark plugs. That was running Dunlop Adventurers, a 185R14 Light Truck design (about 17% bigger than standard). What I've found, quite stumping me, is that it seems that I'm slightly better fuel economy when using the bigger tyres compared to the standard 13"s.

Since fitting the Nankangs 27's I'm yet to calculate the difference in economy. However, my gut feeling is that it's a lot worse. Evidence seems to point at the 2.0 Impreza engine being the most efficient when driving the bigger tyres. I'm surprised to read that the 2.2 Liberty engine is coming up with 14L/100k! What the...?

vy series 2 V8 SS commonwhore uses around 18l per 100 clicks on my driving style..prolly goers down to aorund 13 per 100 on granny drive

the 100 sereis v8 landcruiser suicks up 145 litrers of fuel and only does 400 kms on country driving..you figure that one out

the ford F250 took 140litres of deisel and only travelled 450 per tank..go figurellllheheh that was a 6.5 litre turbo deisel V8 however

I usually fill up with between 40 to 44 litres and am lucky to get 400kms between fills. That equates to roughly 9km/L or 11L/100km which is rather a dissapointment, as a fella that owns a MPFI touring wagon told me he gets close to 14km/Litre

I blame that partially on my love for my heavy foot through 2nd and 3rd gear.
Gotta love that EA82t torque curve.

hmmm
lancer (1.8L none of the 1.5L underpowered crap) gets around 10L/100Ks on half highway half traffic but me going to work and back each day isnt to good for fuel economy so gets aroun 12 or 13 usually.

Suby EJ22 got me 400Ks to fill up with 40L on the first tank which was a Drive down to Pingelly around 180 each way with a bit of fun while i was down there.
also runs rich which doesnt help lol
now its around 350Ks or less to fill up with like 40 Litres

old Outback EJ25 DOHC was running around 13/100ks thru traffic to city and back home

mums new Honda Jazz 1.5L averages 6L/100Ks with her going to the citty and back int eh traffic whihc is pretty damn good.

Parents reckon the Pajero (3.5 V6 DOHC) is around 15 when we drive it which is only really towing stuff (like our caravan)

My EA82t L gets around 10.5L/100km in country and just over 11 in the city running 185/85/14" tyres. But driving like Suparoo- really exploiting the torque curve through 2nd and 3rd will return closer to 15L/100km.

My brothers Series 2 RX7 with its ported 13B and twin-throat 48mmIDA gets 22L/100km... on a good day.

Mate of mine has a Peugeot 505 turbo diesel that is heavily modified for economy, it returned 4.5-5L/100km towing a trailer on a trip to melbourne!

MY89 L-Series 4WD wagon (EA82): 12.35L/100km over 23000km. 250000km on odometer. Best: 9.41L/100km (ULP); worst: 15.11L/100km (Premium ULP). 3100rpm @100km/h

MY92 Liberty AWD wagon (EJ22): 10.57L/100km over 202,000km. 296,000km on clock. Best: 8.26L/100km (ULP); worst: 14.18L/100km. Most interesting stat: 14.08L/100km - cruise set at 150km/h for 350km.

3100rpm @100km/h

MY05 RS Impreza sedan (EJ25) uses 9.13L/100km (stats from only 549km - one tank). 2850rpm @ 100km/h

The big thing with Subarus compared to other larger cars is their lower gearing which means higher revs and higher consumption at high speeds. Your stock 6-cylinder or 8-cylinder vehicles can use less fuel at 100km/h than many Subarus. 80km/h seems to be the limit of good economy with these cars

My 1990 E34 BMW M5 is sitting on 12.7l /100 km at the moment - mainly mixed outer urban driving - but it used to sit around the 14l /100km mark. It only gets revved hard when the oil is warm - so that means never on a trip that is less than 10km long - and very often when the trips is over 10km. When I ran the new engine in earlier this year, I got just under 10l/100km on a trip to Brisbane. I've also had it up to 30l /100km - but that was a track day at a slow track (Winton) - and it used about a third of a set of tyres in 200km - but it was fun.

The 1989 BMW E34 535i gets about 13l / 100km in mixed outer-urban driving.

My 1983 Mercedes 500SEC uses 90 litres to get from Nth-West Sydney to Canberra and back - and my daughter's Mazda 6 would use about 50 litres for the same trip - around 500 - 550 km.

My 1974 7.2 litre Jensen Interceptor gets 11 mpg - about 23 litres / 100km. I managed to get it up to 13 mpg on a country trip a few years back.

But how many litres is it using, or is that running the tank dry?

the thing is as soon as you lift and big tyre these cars they use more fuel, my lib got around the 500 k mark out of a tank before i lifted it and now im lucky 2 get 400!!!! depands on how hard i push it!!

A full tank on the gauge or a full tank in real life?

If it's a true full tank then you'd need to be carrying a jerry can with you.

The low-fuel light comes on at different levels for different models at between 15 and 7 L remaining usually. On 3 of mine I can still travel over 100km when the gauge shows "E" as they usually have it set at a reserve level. I can put anywhere up to 12L in when it shows empty.

Yeah, but unless you have re-calibrated your speedo that 400km isn't really 400km is it? How much bigger are the tyres than the stock diameter? Larger tyre diameter should help with using a little less fuel at cruising speed as there are less rpm required for a given speed than before.
