It's a bit cheap and nasty for now, but the plan is to use the first design to cut the parts for a better one.

It's mostly made from scrap pieces of 12mm and 16mm aluminium I found laying around (some was leftovers from my adapter plate). X and Z axis uses linear bearings with threaded rod as the leadscrew, Y axis is a THK KR33 linear guide actuator. Stepper motors are from http://www.hobbycnc.com, and controller software is EMC2. Cutting area is roughly 400 x 300 x 120.

Parts were made by printing out various views from the cad design, and spray gluing the bits of paper onto the part to use as a template. Normally if I get things accurate to within 2mm I'm having a good day! I managed to get everything to fit without overdrilling holes, and the squareness was amazingly good considering I used an angle grinder and a file to cut the parts!

The plan is to use it to make circuit boards, aluminium machine parts, and I seem to have been conscripted to make a few signs as well. :)

That’s great. What made you decide to undertake this project?

Yeah, sounds like R2D2!

It also seems alot like a Reprap, especially if you're using it to build parts for a better one... Though a reprap would be used best in conjunction with a home made foundry. The reprap would make the models, which are used to make the molds, which then have the metal poured into them.
