Making a 2.8TD Nissan Patrol faster???

Post by Gannon » Tue Mar 18, 2008 4:43 pm

My mate has a 99 Nissan Patrol with the RD28Ti intercooled turbo diesel and feels terribly underpowered. I didnt believe him until he let me have a drive, i think my car was faster when i had the EA82 carby. (mind you the patrol weighs 2 and a half tonne)

So what can we do to make it go a little better.

So far we have come up with

1. Fit a better flowing exhaust
2. Turn up the boost, does the ECU need modifying for this, this engine has an AFM?
3. 4.2TD engine transplant (this is a little extreme)

Anybody have experience with these.

I think you would be far better off asking this question on a patrol forum :).

Rodeo 2.8's do well with turbo back exhaust, larger intercooler and a little more boost, in that order... Guess its a similar sort of motor

No point if its been thrashed alot tho.

you will need to dyno it if you turn the boost up.
The fuel timing & injection duration will need to adjusted to suit the hight boost levels.

A BIG front mount intercooler makes a huge difference to them.
And a 3" dump pipe is another good addition...

My dad's 2.8td isn't too bad, I'd say if it feels 'slow' there is something wrong. Like wastegate stuck open or something else equally unusual. Needs to be looked at anyway...

Or sold to be replaced by a legendary SUBARU 4x4...

Com'on, put the pressure on your mate, it sounds like a good time to upgrade...

Big bore exhaust then this - http://www.motsons.com.au/management-systems.htm

One of my customers has that and reckons it pulls like a train now.

I wouldn't even consider changing the motor to anything else. Have you seen the price of a diesel motor lately ?

you really need to get the beast onto a dyno to get an accurate graph of its torque and power through the speeds, compare it to what is expected of it and start from there. Some Diesel experts run free 1800 numbers for free advice , some you may have to pay for the call.

New filters all round and i dont think it blows much smoke.

It does come onto boost around 1800rpm cos you can hear it.

I wonder if the MAF needs cleaning?

In all seriousness are you just blowing hot air ? Power to weight ratio says the subie is going to be LOTS faster. Are you actually wanting to spend some money to get the patrol moving or just seeing if there is a magical $5 mod that gives you 50% more power and torque ?

Its not my Patrol, its the guy i work with.

He rekons there must be something wrong with it. Its an absolute slug, especially if he has to pull out onto the highway. Maybe thats just because there is only a 2.8lt motor pushing nearly 2.5ton

We will have to find another patrol and compare them

Thanks for the replys

Oh right. I'm wondering what he is comparing with in that case. It's not the size of the motor really, more like the way its set-up/tuned.
