My latest aussie salmon captures

Post by Alex » Tue Jul 18, 2006 10:44 pm

the salmon season has come and gone on the west coast, a few mates and i had some great sessions catching 5 or 6 fish each all around the six kilo mark.

This fish pictured below is the biggest salmon i have caught to date. It was pushing a metre long and weighed 9.1kgs! All my salmon this season including this monster where caught on my light 7ft 2-4kg bream stick with 10lb braid.

Excellent fish. Do you blokes still get a run of huge Tailor over there? I remember reading quite a few years back about schools of 7-9kg Tailor making their annual spawning run. At the time of reading it, the best we were getting reliably here was around 2-3 kgs.

we dont get a real tailor run, more of a season, nowadays its pretty rare to come across a school of tailor over the kilo mark in the metro area. In the winter months tailor are less prolific but theyre bigger, in the summer months you have more chance of catching them, but they all tend to be choppers, nothing over 50cms.

This weekend im going about 300km north of Perth to Jurien bay, (give the suby a thrash on the beach) the tailor there are massive, and its not unlikely that a fish from the 6-9kg mark wont be caught!

What kind of tackle were you using- hooks bait etc?

Salmon fishing in SA is good but catching fish that big would be real rare thrill.

On such light gear that is a real achievment, congratulations!

we where using wire trace about 30-40cm (30lb) to a set of 4/0 gangs. A half mulie for bait, and a fairly constant stream of cubed mulies for burley!

Exmouth is my dream fishing location, ive got a trip organised to go up there just before chrissy, should be sweet as!
