Yep, I parked next to it last Tuesday. I think the exhaust just looks long because there's no bumper, but it's the first thing I noticed as well

EA72 Twin Carb from the JDM L Series but extremely rare.. to the point I didn't think Subaru released them to the market

There was an unreleased EA-72 concept engine Subaru developed for use in the Japanese Market in 1989. It was essentially an EA-82 with an EA-71 crankshaft. This engine never came about as the Subaru EJ15 and EJ16 were already in development for this purpose.

No doubt another interesting design from the Subaru engineers, wondering where Sublime got his

No, they are just twin carb EA71 engines in the open wheelers. I don't think any EA72's escaped from captivity...

It has EA*1 metal cam covers and no timing belt.

Top stuff mate! You'll love them! It's a pity you don't have 5 though, that's the only downer, but a pug steelie will do the job and keep the offset correct

It was I... and yes I had a EA72 in the shop about 15 years ago. Was for a test vehicle and it was a Twin Carbed EA71 (1600cc). The EA71 (with metal rocker covers and no timing belt) was still available in the L.Series in Japan until the early 90s. The EA72 was Subaru's code for it having 2 carbies.
