Its not an EDIS wheel!
1. EDIS generally refers to a computerised ignition control system that is separate to the fuel injection computer. Subaru has never had an EDIS system because they used the ECU to control their ignition timing in the 1987+ MPFI L Seres all all EJ's since. I suppose you could call all distributorless ignition systems EDIS, but nobody does. They are usually called 'coil on plug' or 'wasted spark' ignition.
2. Diesel engines dont have spark plugs or ignition coils so definitely no EDIS
The toothed wheel is simply the crankshaft timing/position wheel so the ECU can determine crank position. Probably mounted it on the back because the crank position sensor would be inaccessible on the front without first removing the massive chain cover.
