Subaru Legacy RS
Year: 1991 (series1)
Kms: 180,000
Colour: White
Body: Sedan
History: It's a New Zealand new model, not a used Japanese import. Subaru New Zealand imported a small number of Legacy RS’s in 1990 and 1991, direct from factory, for sale through their dealerships. Mine was first registered in April 1991.
I'm the second owner and I've had it for 11 years. We brought it to Australia 5 years ago as a Personal Import. All original paperwork available, including importation paperwork. Full service history up to 100,000km with all documentation. 100,000km service was done at a dealership, so included all fluids, timing belt and I also asked for new platinum plugs and OEM coilpacks, purely as a precaution after 1 coilpack failed.
I've pretty much done everything since then: oil/filter
religiously every 5,000km's. I used Castrol Formula RS 10W-60 for the first few years but that got a little $$$$ with changing every 5,000km's so I changed over to Castrol Magnatec 10W-40. There's a little tappet noise at startup when nearing the next oil change, but otherwise she's pretty damn good! I've also changed the fuel and air filters at the specified intervals, replaced the front brake pads, replaced the brake fluid and clutch fluid, plus I regularly check the gearbox, diff and power steering levels.
Rego: expires 23/11/10. 6 months added 22/5/10.
RWC: Queensland Safety Certificate (Roadworthy) gained 22/4/10, passed first pop with no issues or concerns. Comment from inspector "this has been well kept".
Modifications:
Turbo: Standard VF8 plus VOSchip. Series2 Legacy 16-bit ECU and VOSchip fitted 6 years ago for much improved off-boost driveability and increased boost. Awesome improvement over the standard Legacy 8-bit ECU.
Walbro fuel pump fitted.
Driveline: Standard 4.111 Gearbox and Rear LSD. Bugeye WRX gearshift mechanism fitted for improved shift feel.
Engine: Standard RS 2.0l Closed Deck
Cooling: Standard RS WAIC. Samco silicone hose kit for turbo --> WAIC and WAIC --> throttle body. GFB plumb-back BOV. Gen2 airbox and “Al spec” stainless joiner pipe from AFM --> turbo.
Exhaust: 3in Turbo Back Exhaust, in stainless, with split dump, Hi-Flo cat, hotdog resonator and twin tip X-Force muffler. A work of art from Al @ AMAuto
Stereo: single DIN Clarion headunit (radio/tape) and a 6-disc CD Changer unit mounted in the boot underneath the parcel shelf. Changer comes with 2x 6-disc magazines. 1.5DIN storage bin underneath the head unit.
Handling: GC8 WRX front struts, BG5 (Gen2) Legacy rear struts (Tokico EDUSA), '03 STi springs. A very nice upgrade from standard.
Whiteline 20mm front swaybar with standard end-links and Superpro bushes.
Whiteline 18-20-22mm blade adjustable rear swaybar with heavy duty I-links and heavy duty mounting kit.
Whiteline H-Brace.
Whiteline ALK (Anti Lift Kit).
V3/V4 STi carbonfibre front strut brace.
Whiteline brake master cylinder brace.
Superpro steering rack bushes.
Wheels: MY98 WRX rims fitted with 205/50 ZR16 BF Goodrich g-Force Sport tyres
Interior / Exterior: Standard Legacy RS brown dash and plastics, charcoal seats. The standard Legacy RS front seats are "huggier" than Liberty RS seats, the side bolsters are slightly bigger and hold you in a little bit better.
WRX leather gearknob and matching leather gaiter (custom, replaces rubber boot).
Standard Legacy 4-spoke MOMO leather steering wheel in excellent condition.
Hollandia electric sunroof, dealer fitted back in 1991, works perfectly and has never leaked.
Automatic climate control air conditioning, in perfect working order. I had the system changed over to R134a refrigerant as part of importing the car into Australia.
Standard 240km/h speedo cluster (not 180km/h like the Japanese model).
Autometer “Carbon” boost guage, mounted in a modified A-pillar holder.
Side mirrors have electric fold back feature. It’s surprisingly useful, especially in the garage.
Cruise control, not available on the Legacy RS unless you know Al from AMAuto…...Al retro-fitted a full Subaru factory cruise control 3-4 years ago, including the boss mounted control lever and dash mounted on/off button. Works perfectly.
Full keyless entry, interfaced with standard central locking and an aftermarket alarm. I replaced the factory horns with twin air horns years ago, if you accidentally set the alarm off it'll wake up Mars…….trust me, you’ll only do it once

Small 1-3-5min turbo timer, fitted discretely into the dash (looks factory).
Jaycar digital temperature guage, mounted in the black trim piece to the left of the steering wheel, temperature probe is inserted in the short silicon pipe between WAIC and throttle body.
Black “universal” floor mats.
Subaru factory fitted multi-tray in the spare-wheel well. It sits above the spare wheel and is very useful storage for things like first-aid kit, toolkit, gloves, tie-downs, etc, etc.
Hayman Reese towbar and electrical plug fitted a couple of years ago. Also has a rubber shin-protector and towball “condom”.
Overall Condition: Very good outside, excellent inside. I've garaged this car at every home we've lived in since I bought it 11 years ago. There’s years left in this car, it still surprises me how good the paintwork and interior is.
The rear bumper copped some minor damage after I reversed into a low brick wall 4 years ago, it’s cosmetic and I’ve never bothered getting it properly fixed. I took a heap of pics at the time, so you can see the original damage if you’re interested. I’ve sourced a replacement lower lip for the rear bar, but never fitted it as the bumper should be repaired / repainted first.
Front bar has a few scuff marks and a good quality respray would bring it in line with the rest of the paintwork.
There’s also the odd scuff or tiny dint to remind you the car’s nearly 20 years young, but you need to look pretty hard for them.
Other Info: As much as I love this car, it's time to move on to a new home. I need a wagon nowadays for work / life, and I've already bought one (YAY for the MY04 Outback 3.0R!!!). I'd love to see this car go to a real enthusiast, preferably an existing forum member so I can keep up with developments.
My long term plans for this car included repairing/respraying the rear and front bumper bars, fitting a worked 2.0L or 2.5L and matching 6-speed, chucking on a set of bugeye STi rims powdercoated in charcoal, fitting a pair of black '02 WRX front seats and whacking on a suspension upgrade (either Billies or good quality coilovers).
I would love to see a forum member do this! I reckon it would make the car damn near perfect!
