So who has one and are they any good?

I had the basic GPS in the old UHF in the orange car and it was handy for marking way points, camp sites, danger spots and stuff like that. No good for any thing like plotting or better still following your track back out.

Who is using what for a car pc? Where is the best placed to buy all this sort of crap? I really need to get a gps system and possibly car pc before Fraser next year.

what do you want to do with it?

if you just want a GPS, buy one

if your good with computers and want something you can tinker with, go for a carPC

www.mp3car.com forum is the best resource on all of the interweb, I have been lurking there for about 8 years ;) start reading there...

I want to be able to do gps (tracking and way points), have mp3's on there for the trip, be able to download my photos while tripping, maybe dvd's and other bits I can fiddle with.

i have one in my B4 .. it doesnt really record tracks much what with it driving on the road most of the time. But its great for Mp3s .. double din sized touch screen makes it easy to control also (bit hard to read in sunlight is the only problem).

Just using a usb GPS thing (sirfIII) that sits on my dash. Gets the signal reasonably quickly. I use mapmonkey for my on road driving and have played with oziexplorer for offroad but i dont do much of that in my b4.

It can be a pita though as if its going to stuff up its when you need it and you end up having to pull the computer out from under the seat and plug stuff in and out to make it go again. (usb weirdness)

I bought a Asus EEE PC ( 8" solid state laptop ) which I'm looking to put GPS onto and see how it goes as a Carputer. Was $500.

i have a pda with inbuilt gps hp ipaq 6515
i was using in the car with oziexplorer ce and the program worked well
and btw ozi maps are fairly expensive

the pda tended to crash a bit and dosent have enough memory to store lots of mp3s
never bothered my as i use my ipod for music

I am not going to worry about it before this trip now. I have bought a hand held GPS and am just going to get an iPod for the music. I am taking the laptop to download pics to as well. So I won't really need it this time.
