Need Front axle length of XT6's please .

Post by discopotato03 » Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:15 am

Hi all , been looking through an XT4/XT6 WSM and came across some interesting facts about XT6 front drive shafts .

The XT4's are pretty much as per Turbo L Series and I have used front driveshafts from a FrWD EA82T Vortex in my RX Turbo L Series .

The 1988 Vortex Factory Workshop Manual mentions that XT6's used unique shafts as you'd expect with higher ER27 flat 6 type torque output .

The two types it shows are for FrWD and 4WD XT6's and the assemblies are -

FrWD 100AC-25 with 25.4mm diameter axle shaft .
4WD 95AC-25 with 28.0mm diameter axle shaft .

The diagrams show the CV joints as being different on XT6's compared to XT4's - sort of like Liberty ones to suit the EJ style knuckle/bearing assembly .

The thing the diagrams don't show is the axle length so on the off chance that anyone has an XT6 front shaft disassembled could they let me know the length of the axle shaft bare - as in CV and DOJ removed .

Long shot I know but asking anyway , cheers A .

Now to USMB ...

What is it you are trying to achieve by using XT6 shafts?

The answer came back from USMB at 19 7/8" which is close enough to 505mm .
I want to see if they are an inbetween size or same length as 1st gen Liberty . Will measure RX L and 1st gen Lib tonight to compare .

Cheers A .

Aim , if you wish to widen the front track of a L series the drive shaft assembiles have to be longer otherwise the DOJ ball/cage will be too far out of the bell or outer race housing .

The best solution would be axle shafts ~ 15-20mm longer than std but they may not exist .
Liberty DOJs (25 spline either side ones) are longer than Ls and if the inner race and cage is turned around the combination may allow a 10mm longer drive shaft assembly .

I also want to know if Subaru did anything with axle length when changing to the shorter EJ type CV joint . We know that XT4s use the L type knuckle/axle/CV/DOJ/ so whats if anything happens axle length wise when they use the XT6 knuckle and CV joint .
XTs being in the transition era are the only Subarus I know of that had both systems in the same body dimensions so the opportunity exists to see how they went about it .

Know your enemy , cheers A .

Ok the story is ;

1) L Turbo axle is ~ 490mm
2) XT6 front axle is ~ 505mm
3) 1st Gen Lib axle is ~ 525mm

I haven't explored much of the Impreza range but Gee tells me that early Imprezas are dimensionally the same as early Liberty .
He also mentioned to be careful because Imp' ones sometimes use weird fine 30 spline axles and joints .

Cheers A .
