93' Liberty Wagon Suspension

Post by blue23 » Sat Jun 12, 2010 5:51 pm

Hi

im new to the Subaru world,

i have just bought myself a 93' liberty Wagon, which has the self levelling suspension in it, which has pretty much shit it self and does not work and just makes alot of work.

i have had my mechanics look at it and quote me on, pulling this system out and putting just, shocks and springs in. the quote was about $2000 to have them pull it out and put new

Tops
struts
springs
(i need the whole kit and kaboodle)

i am just wondering if anyone else has gone through this process and if they sourced the parts themselves and how much it was? i would liek to get the suspension myself and get my mechanic to put it in as this might end up being a little cheaper for me.

or, what are peoples thought on Coilover suspension set ups? are they worth going for or are just standard suspension set ups ok?

cheers

Hello and welcome to the AUSubaru forums.

My brother bought the struts/springs from the wreckers and converted his himself and i think it cost him about $600

Its not a hard job.

Have you done much mechanically before?

How is the so-called 'coilover' different, other than in terms of performance specifications?
Surely all coil and shocker systems are just that?
(Am prepared to be 'flamed' as an ignoramus!)

The best common upgrade for these Gen 1 Liberty with air struts is to convert them to coils and struts.

Coils new are roughly $110 a pair.
Struts are all over the place, best price i could find was $160 a pair.

Best bet is to source 2nd hand coils from wreckers.
Get yourself new struts - do home work for best price/type.

You will need a spring compressor to compress springs to install on struts in correct position but again, you will need suspension hats as well..

I went thru this with someone, he decided to buy a set of 2nd hand coils but they werent old, the struts was about 4 years old and it did have new raised coils on them as well and he paid $140 all up for his Gen 1 Liberty.

Just disconnect the air compressor and install normal struts.

On converting to coils.
Question : Will the coil over shocks from a series 2 liberty front wheel drive sedan ( 95 model ) bolt into a series 1 liberty AWD wagon ( 93 model )?
I had a cursory look under the back of a donor car, and apart from the lack of driveshafts, they looked ( in the dark with a weak torch ) to be a match.
(y)es / (n)o / (c)omplicated?
Thanks.

If the rears off from FWD model - then it wont work on AWD models as its different design in the rear. Fronts are interchangeable.
