How to install a Lift Kit in an L-series???

Post by subatrue » Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:15 am

Howz it going people? I was advised by one of the members (who I sourced a 3 inch lift kit from for my 94 L-Series) to jump on the forum and search for some info about installing lift kits. I have not been able to find much relating to the L-Series... does anyone have details, and advice on the steps taken to install a kit? I tried offering Guyph and his bro more money to do the dirty work when i bought the kit from him but they were tied up with other projects so i have to harden up and do it myself lol!!
Thanks guys, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ashleyn, Thats a really comprehensive description of the process and good to see a few pics also. I did see your posts earlier but I was not sure how closely it relates to L-Series installation, I guess there would not be much difference hey. Thanks again, very helpful

This is what i've found:)

Those pics are off my old 3inch liftkit that i had in my car. Would be similar to yours. The smaller blocks if you have them normally go with the gearbox mounts.

showthread.php?t=14743

And be sure to be 200% you aling everything well and dont cross thread the threads when putting the bolts in or your ****ed! Also a good tip i learnt from DR urabus is to apply some anti seize on the threads before you remove them.

Also when removing the bolts, if they get really hard to unscrew, spray some WD40 or similar and screw them back in, repeat this until they come out. What happens is with age dirt and shit gets on the thread on the other side and cause it to jam. screwing and un-screwing slowly cleans the thread. May take a while if you don't have air tools:(

And Arwww, you make me look bad:(

also dont overtighten the bolts when installing the kit. I think this was a major contributer to my captive nut problems.

Thanks for the advice guys... Hey Guyph, glad I got the right person in my first post, didn't actually know if that was you but I recognized some pics of your wagon and thought it must have been you, sure is a nice example of an L-Series mate. Sorry to make ya look bad... Was more so having a laugh at myself for trying to get some bloke I just met to do the hard work of installing the kit for me! Anyway I'm going to give it a crack soon when I get some spare time, luckily I have a air comp and rattle gun! Thanks again for the tips guys.

Ken Block copied me (i was way before his time.... about 2 years lol)

i think it was more the twice a week all day thrashings and 18psi of boost that did it.

i still wouldnt overtighten them though.

(but then again id never lift a l-series the conventional way again)

Well revive/start it again!! You might get less "chatter" in between your build posts! I'm seriously considering a summary about Ruby Scoo - sooo much has happened in her time, I just need to get my shit together and dig up my first photo of her and go from there ;)

subatrue - take LOADs of before and after pics, you won't regret having them to look over a few years from now ;)

Cheers
