Clunk, Help!

Post by specwarop » Fri Dec 07, 2012 7:14 pm

Need you help guys!
Recently I have noticed that there has been a small clunk from the left rear of my 2006 Liberty when going over bumps, etc.
I checked it out this afternoon and noticed I can replicate the same clunk when I push down on the car above the left rear wheel.
What could be causing this?

I only started noticing the noise after picking the car up from the mechanic, after I took the car to the dealer for then to replace the front control arm rear bush as it was torn.
Bought the car 3 weeks ago, and its still under statutory warranty.

Any help appreciated!!!

You go to have a front control arm bush replaced and now you have a noise in the back?

Did they replace the FRONT control arm REAR bush?

Or did they replace the REAR control arm FRONT bush?
Regards

Gary ;)

They definitely replaced the front control arm rear bush. I checked and its brand new, and Red. Old one was black.

It could be the bush that connects the bottom the the shock absorber to the rear trailing arm. They are flogged out in mine and clunk. Only way to replace them is with a new shock absorber

Had a quick squiz today and noticed they are Bilsteins.

From my limited knowledge, they appear to be coilovers, as they look similar to pictures I have seen of actual coilovers.
However, my reference of a non-coilover system is something found in a Falcon, where the spring and shock aren't linked...

If however, they aren't coilovers, can you just replace the rears to coilovers, or do you need to change the whole car?

Also, was thinking of taking the car to Pedders for their $14 28-point check to see if they can pinpoint the issue.
I don't mind paying if the check is worthwhile. I am hoping then if something is wrong, I will have evidence for a statutory warranty claim.

Regards...

I'd have the strut checked out. I know with my L series that when the shocks in the strut are no longer doing what they should be that it produces a low audible clunking sound as the suspension does small movements over ripples in the road.

Okay well, took it to Pedders for the 28-point check and a number of things were realised

1 - the ****wit useless as **** Dealer Mechanic, who recently replaced the rear LCA bush, forgot to put the balljoint bolt back on on one side. Needless to say, I was very lucky that it didnt come apart at speed causing a serious accident.
It is said this is what the clunk noise was, and Pedders replaced the bolt, no sign of clunk anymore.

2 - the rear shocks are worn and need replacing.

Glad you found the problem mate, & without a serious mishap. Just try to be glad it didn't end a lot worse.

I reckon you need to go back to this dumb**s dealer & suggest he sack his moronic mechanic, pointing out that they could've faced not just a large law suit but criminal negligence charges as well!

Far out!!! That's shit service from a dealer! I wouldn't be going back there...

I almost had the same thing happen with the ball joint falling out, but it was my fault.. If the rear shockies are stock then replace them with KYB's. Should only be about $100 each side on the rear plus labour... ;)

Good to hear it's sorted though mate :)

If you have a 3.0rb liberty with bilstein suspension it will be expensive to replace the rear shocks. Are they yellow? How many km have they travelled?

If it's anything under 150km I doubt they're stuffed unless it's been hammered hard in the past.

Well first thing ill be doing is ringing consumer affairs to discuss the ball joint issue, and also to see if I can claim to have the rear shocks replaced.
They are bilsteins in this model, not sure how they compare to KYB....

Alex, yeh they are Bilstein. Cheapest ive found to replace the whole car is about $800 shipped from the US.
I am assuming they are original equipment which means theyve done 110000km.

Its hard to know whether what Pedders have said is true regarding the shocks, I made it clear that if they needed replacing it wouldnt be done by them. So who knows if they are just upselling...

Even the oem units?

Bilsteins are a very good setup, they do handle very well, however they're very rough. Kybs are alot smoother, still handle acceptably but aren't even close to Bilsteins handling wise

My dad has a 3.0rb and hates the roughness of the Bilsteins.
