My l series front wheel bearings are shagged. How much should I be prepaired to pay?

from memory they are about 45 bucks a side (they come as a set of two ball bearing races and two different sized rubber seals).
Call up your local parts suppliers for accurate prices.
Try to get the sealed type of bearing, less likely for crap to get in and ruin them.

edit - if you are looking for a mechanic to install them I'd estimate they'd slug you probably 2 hours labour.

bout $50-60 for both of em.

Go to a bearing supplier like CBC , don't get ripped off by Repco etc .

I thought the same until i got the sames bearings from malz for half the cbc price... just a different box, same bearings.

Hey fellas I think I'm in the same boat:

When I veer my Leone to the right (especially going up an incline) I hear a knocking sound from the front of my car that goes faster when I increase speed. Lately it has been getting louder and more frequent.

My mate who owns an 01 WRX bets his bottom dollar its the wheel-bearings going cause he had the same problem.

I don't wanna pay 800 to get em done like he did, can someone tell me what this 'Malz' supplier is seeing as they apparently do the parts cheaper than CBC?

yours sounds more like a cv joint than a bearing- they dont usually knock. either way it wont be $800 to replace. sounds like your mate got ripped off

Quick google:

A popping or clicking noise when turning. This almost always indicates a worn or damaged outer CV joint. A quick way to verify this condition is to put the car in reverse, crank the steering wheel to one side and drive the vehicle backwards in a circle (check the rearview mirror first!). If the noise gets louder, it confirms the diagnosis and the need for a new joint or replacement shaft assembly.

Think I'd better go do that reverse in circles trick to be sure

Yeah bearings are usually a grinding noise whereas cv's are clicky! just type in bearings or cv in the search tool and youll find heaps of threads on the topic.

I've gone for the cheap option. $50 s/hand hub.

Why pay $50 for 2nd hand hub whereabouts you can get new bearings for same price & second hand hub could go next week or week after or never know when, and you don't know the condition of it before it was removed from the car.

It's the best option to keep the car on the road. Once done, I can go to pick-a-part & get a free pair (mate works there) so I can get new bearings.
