try a wreckers. loosen the bolts then side it one way and you should be able to get it off.

As Subafury said. It's easy to take off. Just make sure you mark a cog on each of the two shafts so that when you put it back together it's all straight. Also, when putting it back together you must make sure that the flattened section of the steering column shaft lines up with the path that the bolt will go or you can strip the thread of the bolt by trying to screw it across the splined section.

Mine has some play in it too. The wreckers is a good source for a new one... cheapest way to go and you'll easily be able to test a good one in the car. I priced getting the CV joints pressed out and fitted with new ones by a CV specialist... $100 he said. It's about the same cost for a new one sent to you if your car is lifted and requires a lengthened part.

Had a recent steering shaft seemed like it was stuffed but the cruch area was filled with small stones so it wouldnt tighten properly a clean and a carefull application of new grease and it was all good as new.

It can also be the rack not the steering extension that has the play
