3in 5mm channel strong enough for L bodylift?

Post by brenton » Sat Jun 27, 2009 5:59 pm

hey guys im looking at building my liftkit , ive found some 5mm thick channel that should be strong enough for the L series wouldnt it. i could always weld supports into it aswell. i just thought with C channel i can use smaller length bolts like the SJR kit. anybody using C channel for their lift kit ?

Never seen anyone using channel but if it's 5mm then I doubt you'd bend it in a hurry.
I wouldn't use it myself when there are better options. I built a 3" body lift using RHS and captive nuts once, for an RX Turbo off road racecar and never had a problem but I have heard of the RHS tearing on other cars. In retrospect, I think the longer bolts with crush tubes design is probably safer and stronger.

Why are you trying to build a lift kit anyway? Just buy it, they're cheap as chips.

well i have the C channel already sitting at my house. and i cant afford a liftkit for 750 atm i also enjoy making things. 5mm thick looks very thick and strong, also it seems thicker on the corners like 6 or 7mm like a mini gusset. would make it easy to use short bolts with the open c channel. what thickness RHS steel where you guys using ?

Thicker in the corners? It's not tapered channel is it? If it is, don't even think about using it.
