Brumby brake upgrade

I'd like to upgrade my front brakes (83 Brumby) and at he same time keep the 4 stud hubs. just a stock original Brumby, just want a better braking system. Something I could takle myself. Suggestions would be appreciated.

If you want to keep the original stud pattern then you are quite limited.
The brakes from 84 models onwards had abit bigger discs which are ventilated, I believe you can just slap these straight on without mods.
Some benefits can be had by upgrading the rear brakes to discs from a turbo L series Vortex or RX.

Yeh, i've got some nice sunrasias ready to go on, so i'd rather keep the origanal hubs. What about, better calipers, or rotors? I have read the rear disc conversion.:D that sounds good.

Yeh, i've got some nice sunrasias ready to go on, so i'd rather keep the origanal hubs. Anyone know of any later front brakes for sale in W.A? I have followed the thread on the rear disc conversion. that sounds good. :p

I intended to fit L Series hubs and rotors to my Brumby BUT asking in here we found some had tried and really found the angle of the L stubs is different to that of MY series and causes no end of grief and will not work correctly for handle, steer trye wear etc, so forget L fronts.Someone in here did post that they had a set of rears as they had gone 5 stud upgrade and wondered how much they were worth. Pursue that avenue and you should be smilin' just like me and TOONGA who have gone that way. Your Brumby may be a little in need of new stuff. My master cylinder has started leaking out the back near booster, getting spare resleeved, I have replaced front flex pipe, got some new for rear as cracks appearing. Never done front calipers but think I should tackle the dirty messy cruddy task. Some have done it and been happy with their cheap and cheerful efforts, I have the venteds front on my 84 Brumby. Rotor condition and pad selection must also have some bearing on performance.

Thanks Steptoe, i've actually done the front calipers. The only tricky part is the handbrake lever, but with care it can be done.
What pads are you using? I've just looked at some on ebay, specially made for Brumby 4WD. $52 + Del. Don't know what they'd be like. Does quality make a real difference, mine are fairly cheap.

FRENCH brakes? Spike, are you assuming because the stud pattern is same the brakes and hubs are gonna be playwithable? Pug of same stud pattern is RWD, and our MY are at least FWD to 4WD to AWD. You are thinking wider - good stuff Do you have something in mind you have not shared with us like some knowledge, I must say I never looked at FRENCH brakes, don't mind their mags though :) With your family business you may have been exposed to more adaptive techniques than the rest of us, unfair advantage you have there

Aware some people have great grafting skills of all sorts of things - know of Porsche discs on rear of five stud Brumby, but nothin' else

I have seen L series brakes on a brumby, They had a kink (like a bent strut) in the bottom of the struts (custom coilovers) to compensate for the change in camber. They spent big $ on these struts and it would have been better to go for a 5 stud conversion.

Maby a adjustable strut top may also work?

asked of pads, my previous set were Bosch and got great life and service out of them so naturally went same brand but got their QS range and ever since on occasions I get a binding caliper sound, on slow car park speed turns, VOOT, VOOT, VOOT

but the size of the disks is what you (I) need to worry about if theyre bigger theyre probably better, put the subaru calipers on with a custom bracket if needed

In the long run it will cost the same and give you better performance. IMO sell the sunnies and just buy another set in 5 stud.

ps. I'm running 4 disc setup on Brumby pieced together over a year from different L series. And probably have paid a similar price to the kit. Each to their own though.
