hey all, i was just wondering if theres any special trick to getting the stock L-series steering wheel off? ive been trying to fit my new chunky sports wheel, but cant seem to get the pissy little standard one off...

Having undone the nut there are 3 ways

1. put the nut back on and shake the steering wheel with all you strength until it pops off the steering column.

2. buy a steering wheel puller from a car parts store and use that

3. not recommended to do this but it does work put the nut back on and hit it directly with a hammer (make sure it is on enough so you don't destroy the thread and the nut)

First rule. Dont fully undo the centre nut fully while trying to pull the wheel off, if it suddenly lets go, you will end up with a very sore head.

So loosen the centre nut but leave it on by a few threads. Then with the palm of your hand strike the outside of the wheel towards you at all different positions around the wheel. It will eventually come loose

Once the bolts are off, no need for a steering wheel puller. Be a MAN. sit in the driver seat, hold the wheel with two hands one at 3 and 9 o'clock. Pull as hard as you can towards you and wiggle it from left to right:p


Ohhhh make sure you hit the wheel in your face once it suddenly comes off NOT!!!

Well I know for a fact that mine will only ever come off with a wheel puller!

Tried all of those tricks and none have worked for me. Guyph, If ruby scoo makes it over to WA again you're more than welcome to try and be a man removing ruby's steering wheel!

I prefer the term 'wrestle' with the wheel only after you ensure wheel nut still then undone only a few threads and not for preventing sore head (giving indication Gannon is shorter than me) but saving dental bills as you are likely to have mouth open at time, gritting teeth and making reference to someone elses mother.

I have also used a steering wheel puller with good results.

Care to share source, brand and part number of your new steering boss? My L came with a nice wheel by AutotechnicA on a boss that was more Datsun 180B ish stamped 9708 on it? and only had about 4mm on the splines for it had incorrect taper.

Well guys, looks like im in the same boat as you bennie... i reckon the damn things welded on or something :P... luckily dads good with metal so i wont have to fork out for a actual puller!

Steptoe, the wheels an SAAS number i got cheap off a mate, he had it on his brumby before it got wrecked (RIP)... No idea what brand it is, but it has 6707 stamped on it...

trust me when i say steering wheel puller... we tired just about every way possible to get my mates off... crowbars, 3 of us pulling on it.. even at one stage a snatch strap and my car.. three days and a few dummy spits without the puller and about 10 minutes with it.

Whoa!! Glad you got it cheap. That part number sounds like an autotechnica number. I hear SAAS wheel bolt patterns are same, but splines of th Brumby /MY series I have played with are coarse compared to the L Series fine splines. I am yet to see MY/Brumby steering wheels or aftermarket bosses interchange with L Series

there you go a nice SAAS one I got one from this guy to fit my brumby (it is
different PART# BK121L)

For me, loosen the nut but leave it on, lean forward and wrap your arms around the wheel and first pull one side as hard as you can and then the other side as hard as you can. This breaks the taper lock and if you keep on going from max effort on one side to the other and this works every time.

Hahahaha... yeah man, at $30 i reckon you cant get much cheaper : P... ill give the boss its on a shot, and worse case, ill buy the L one and sell the brumby one...

finally bit the bullet and bought a puller... and it was worth everyone of the $15 haha... unfortuneately the Brumby boss doesnt fit, probably about half the number of teeth that the column has... new boss on the way tho!

Yep agree Busdriver, I'm 6'3 and weigh a decent amount too and let me tell you mine was on tight as a fishes ass! But bugger me I'd sooner break the colum than let it get the better of me.

In hindsight fork out the said $15 up front and avoid the man vs machine contest. Hehe

haha im the same as you Smokey, but i reckon id'a poped a shoulder or somethin before i popped the wheel off...

Disaster, my shiny new Luisi Boss arrived yesterday, and the damn thing is no joke IDENTICAL to the boss i had in the first place, so im right back where i started...

at last the correct boss is here and the sports wheel is where it should be... definitely an improvement i think
