MY, L front strut - gland nut removal ? tips?

I am about to try swap in some partly used gas struts KYB 363027 ? into my Brumby front end, got the strut assy out in under an hour in the dirt workshop and even though springs were captive by compressors there was still some shove in it when top nut came undone.
Now, to pull old strut tiube out and fit new replacement instead of doing seals there is a large washer spot welded to a cap holding the guts in, Gregorys calls it a gland nut yet has no hex shape to friggin' grip, but there are two slots on the sides to grip tool number "can'tbuyanymoreanyway"
EDIT: Suspension Tools # 926510000 shows a flat spanner like an open end in mild steel with a coupla dimples punched to fit the little dimples of the gland washer !
This tool is depicted in diagram to assist undoing top nut by holding L series bits in place, does not look like it is on my gland nut, and factory manual for L's does not cover strut repair at all!!
Any experience out there with these Subie units , care to share ?
