Shock alternatives to KYB - info needed

I know the general peoples choice for shocks is KYB but I would like to know general experiences with alternative shocks.
Are there any shock brands people have had bad experiences with and I will steer clear of these brands.
Are there any brands generally thought to be a good alternative to KYB.
As per a previous post of mine, I am looking for a strut insert cartridge for the front of an MY and KYB are out (dont have anything) so I am going to look at other brands to see if there is a close 2nd to KYB out there that do make a cartridge.
Looking for a gas shock if possible as I am under the impression these are preferable to oil filled.

Had monroe GT gas shocks in the rear of my wagon when I was driving it, can't say they were any better or worse than KYB. I can't suggest any others, can only offer that KYB are original equipment here is Aus ;)

Interesting that the factory manual for my KM3 84 Sherpa gives a measurement for fluid leakage from the standard gas rear shocks that allows fluid leakage to be showing on 1/3 of the housing length before replacement.( Try arguing that point with the mechanic if you have a NSW yearly inspection.) So don't replace just because of slight weeping.

My old Brumby had Monroe front and rear when I got it. 5years later I sold it with the same shocks. They held up very well.
