Brakes and stuff

Post by KERAZY » Sun Aug 19, 2007 12:47 am

I've just been thinking about the arse end of the MY subi.

I don't know if bratgeebah is still producing his kit, but is there some way of getting a blank hub made the exact same dimensions as an MY hub, converting to slotted rear disc brakes, and drilling out the blank hub to 5-stud dimensions so that the stud pattern is that of a liberty? If not, why not? If so, why has nobody done this?

Also, I've read that lowering your rear end will affect your camber. How, as in negative or positive? Any way to remedy this?

Finally, would it EVER be possible to convert the rear end of an MY to coil-over suspension?

I'm just toying with a few ideas at the moment, and I'd love to hear what everyone has to say :).

Ciao,
Jason.

If you look at any driven hub the most involved and expensive part of it from a manufacturing point of view is the internal splines . All the other machinework is simple and straightforward . Gee even said that finding a way to use the factory Liberty hub would be another option with a few one off bits to fit it all together .

Too late for me since I bought his kit but if I couldnt get one I would also look into more common sized 4 stud patterns like possibly the Nissan 4 x 114.3mm . If you do this just make sure that you can get wheels with the right offset because many Subies run something like 55mm of positive offset and I'm not sure what is available to suit all dimensions .

Whats on the back of all L / MY's IS a coilover , all that means is literally the coil is placed over the damper body and held between the spring seats - one on the lower damper body and two up where the strut mount is .

Cheers A .

You can get custom hubs made to suit Liberty brakes but it's very expensive. Getting Lib hubs to fit would also be very expensive.....probably uneconomical.

You can convert the rear end to coilover...there are ways to get a Lib rear end to fit but again, you are talking major modifications (some structural even), cusom fuel tanks etc etc. You would end up overcapitalising on the car.

Really to improve your rear brakes you should do what everybody does - get a set of 4x4 rear discs from a Vortex or RX turbo.

It's been a while since a coil conversion for an MY was brought up. I've seen it done some time ago on a Brumby (MY design) and it was said then that it was a simple procedure that pretty much bolted straight in. However, I can't remember the details and it's been a while since I looked at another MY. From the guys that did it, though, they said it made a great improvement. There must be someone here who's dunnit.

Seems like someone's signature gives away some details of some substantial over-capitalisation hmm? Andrew? :-) (Still jealous of the mod's)

haha yes it does, but I look at my car differently to most people. I see a registered L series body as simply another "part" or component of the fairly expensive little offroading project. If I roll the car or it gets totalled in some other way I havn't lost the money I've spend on mods. I simply replace the body (very cheaply these days) and bolt the mods to the new one. This way people can't tell me I'm spending too much money on an old car. =)
I'd love to see if anybody can dig up some info on the coilover mod to an MY. Although Im running an L series I still need this kind of inspiration to help me figure out how to majorly improve the rear suspension on mine!
