Liberty Air Suspension

Post by Tnate » Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:04 pm

Alrighty guys, I need some help.
I have a 1994, gen 1 liberty GX wagon with the stock air suspension setup. It is all in working order, but sporadically, it will lose pressure and the front of the car will drop.

There is the sound of air rushing out at my right-hand front wheel.

Now I know you're all going to say, "upgrade to springs" but I'm quite happy with my suspension, and would rather keep it as is.

As I said, it doesn't happen all the time. Say once every fortnight. And once I start driving, if I press the height adjust button, it goes back to normal.

My question is, is there an electromagnetic valve that may be shorting, and letting the pressure out. I assume that when I want to lower the height normally, there must be some valve that lets some of the air out.

Any help would be grand

Cheers
Tnate

I had a series 1 for quite a while and had to replace a few air bag struts and each time one failed it would start of doing as you discribed. You will find over time it will become more frequent in its dropping onto the bump stops.
You have a choice, you can just buy a s\hand strut as I use to do or convert to springs.

Ok.

But I don't see how the car can maintain its pressure for weeks at a time, and then suddenly lose all pressure at a single instant.

If a strut needed replacing, wouldn't it always lose pressure?
Maybe even never get up to full pressure?

I just don't see how it can happen so sporadically if it is a buggered strut.

Thanks for the help

I saw a set on ebay a while ago and also 1 airbag suspension - might be worthwhile checking out... there was also a set earlier this year at Jolly's wreckers.

I'm still not convinced. Maybe I'm a sceptic, but I just 'feel' that someting else is amok.

The other day while I was driving, the height button started flashing, and wouldn't stop until I turned the ignition off. I assumed this was because something was buggering up, but when I got out of the car, all the struts seemed pressurised and they still are 3 days later.

Could it be something electrical is causing my suspention to bugger up every now and then?
What the hell is going on? Im still confused.

I was just about to suggest when you said:
"the height button started flashing" that it would well be electrical, maybe old wires shorting out or doing whatever to lose the pressure.

Do you live up a gravel road or travel over any rough roads to get anywhere? could just be dust/dirt getting in there and doing something naughty :)

Gone to a subaru dealer/local mechanic and gotten them to check everything?
Hope this helps.

I'll take the old girl down top the shop and see what they all think.

Thanks for the replies.

What'd they think? Mine has done sporadic weird things for ages - back corner suddenly lifts up sometimes as if they system had been caught off-guard and just realised it was a little low and tries to fix it up really quickly. I am just used to it now.

Actually, now I mention it, it hasn't done it for a while, so maybe I should be worried?
