MY radio antenna

Due to someone bending the radio aerial on the 82 model MY touring wagon a while ago I now need a new (2nd hand) one.
I have tried most of the wreckers in the Newcastle area and no one has any MY's or Brumbies or they have them and no aerials are still in existence.
Can anyone confirm if all MY's and Brumbies have the same aerial.
Has anyone had any success with fitting an aerial from another model/make of car that looks like the original and if so what.

Always hated the aerial on these cars, so exposed and prone to snappage

When mine broke I managed to find one that wasn't broken, but wasn't in much better shape anyway. Surely there's an aftermarket aerial that could be fitted? I'll be looking for a permanent whip type one, that can't be snapped.

I have one, pulled it out when I re-wired the car. Still collapse's and extends. Was going to put it back in at some stage. How desperate are you for one?

Thanks Doug but I can afford to wait till I can do a little more research.

You can slip that black plastic part off the mast & the mounting bracket & put them on a universal mast that is available where they sell car stereos etc. I did it on my Brumby, can't show you cos it's all finished & on the car.

Installed the new, after market antenna in the MY today.

Here is the original with the new onr beside it.
The original is longer and of a more solid construction.
The new one of is from the US (for a LH guard) so I had to use the original antenna bottom mounting bracket (for our RH guard location) as the new bracket was backwards for the RH guard.
The new antenna has a tapered cable sealing plug which seems to be a bit small as when I pushed it into the hole to go into the car it could have been pushed in all the way if I pushed hard enough. I used some sealant to make sure it wouldn't leak.

The hole in the guard was marked with 31 years of grime and imprinted with the sealing face of the original antenna cap seal. Needed to use a bit of cutting compound to clean about 80% of this away.

A photo of the new antenna installed in the guard.
Doesn't look too bad and way better than an aftermarket, generic antenna. At least this one was made for the car as an aftermarket unit.

All up, this is a good option if you need to replace you original MY antenna with something for $25 and looks about 95% original spec.
I would have liked to see the new antenna about 10mm longer as the lower mounting bracket clamps on level with the very end of the new antenna. A bit more length would have been good.
